in fact il start just now cause this may take a while lol

ive made lots of mistakes in pigeon racing and il make more no dout but here is some of what ive found out with trial and error starting with the loft if you have plenty of money by all means buy a big fancy loft if you have the room its nice to look at but it makes no difference to pigeons inside as long as its dry with plenty of air going through it an 8 by 6 garden shed will do just fine use your nose as the judge if you can smell amonia the air flow is not right take a plank off the bottom front and one off the top back wall replace with wire and that should sort it dont worry about birds being cold in the winter thats why they have feathers your loft will get warmer as the weather heats up bringing your birds into condition when it counts during the racing season

next the pigeons this is where you have to save and buy what you can afford its all very well guys saying you get the best birds through friendship and that may be true but we are not all friends with the top flyers so here is what to do get your self 3 or 4 pair of birds from your locall club members tell them your looking for some cocks and hens for feeders or get them cheap from anyone packing up or sales

next have a look at the location your are in and what races you want to excel in if the fanciers nearest you win well at fed and club level from the first to the longest races then so should you with the right birds dont be afraid to go to the best flyer in your area and ask if you can buy some eggs which will be alot cheaper than buying youngbirds if its the long races your interested in ask if you can buy eggs off the birds he is sending to the nationals and set your feeders up to catch them as long as your birds are sitting 2 to 3 days of his birds they should be ok with the soft food or even better get them fresh layed and they will keep till yours have layed failing this get them from a stud i cant see past louella as all my best birds have come from them ive won with there bushaerts vanreets jansens and now with the jan aardens with a stud your garenteed the blood is there buy six youngbirds and fill the loft with youngbirds off them then train and race them hard to sort out the wheat from the chaff then use them as your breeders next specialize by that i mean choose the races that you want to win or score in be it the short races or the long races unless you can afford and have the time to work a big team that you can split for short and long races its best to choose one or the other because if you have one bad toss or race and you will its only a matter of time and luck and if your small team is out your seasons over dont let your will to compete cloud your judgement train them hard for the early races have go then stop them or pair late hold them back to 3 or 4 races then set them up for the big one this way you can compete with the big boys who are sitting with fresh birds in the loft be realistic in what you hope to achive better to send 10 pigeons to your chosen race than one or two to ten races yes your competing but your chances are slight need to sort my birds now be back on later to talk of other things cheers

ok guys so we have covered the loft where to get the best birds you can afford and if you dont have many birds pick your races and your loft location will play a big part in your results dont try to run before you can walk worry about winning in your club first then your fed and national sections if your not in a good location open positions maybe few and far between plenty of time to worry about them and you cant help where you live so be happy to win in your own area if your birds are good enough and the wind is right youll get your turn next keep it simple pigeons are not complicated its the fanciers that make it complicated a pigeon only needs three things to keep it happy one a dry home to rear its young two clean dry food and water and three sex all of which can be used to motivate them forget widowhood roundabout and darkness for a few years till you get the hang of it if you and your birds are not good enough to win or get a turn with natural birds putting them on widowhood roundabout or darkness will not make them any better and all three have there own problems that a novice does not need you can try these things a few years down the line once you learn the ropes if you wish your priority once you have good pigeons is to keep them fit and healthy also you have to make the birds work to your methods theres no point in buying birds off a man who trains 3 times a day 4 days a week if you can only train once or twiced a week because of money or time if thats the case you need to find other ways to get them fit and you can help the lack of training by flagging your birds round the loft give them a little feed before you let them out keep any old or stock birds in the nest boxes as they will pull them down make a flag out of a pole and a bin linner and slice up some potatoes into discs that you can throw at them so your not breaking windows or slates on neighbours roofs or killing anyone with a stone sit a few feed bags on the roof of the loft then make them fly 30 minutes morning and night building up to one hour morning and night its hard work but costs nothing if you can afford to train you dont have to go far 12 to 25 miles three times a week with flagging morning and night will get them fit then you can use the races and flagging to keep them fit for the races you want dont be afraid to jump them if there fit they will get home there homimg pigeons after all if there fit and they dont get home somthing is wrong weather falcons or sick birds falcons and sick pigeons being the main reasons birds dont get home i cant help with the falcons and hawks but you can help the sickness treat your birds for canker and cocci when you pair them up then again the week before racing starts now days its not the stuff you can see thats the problem its the stuff you cant like the viral stuff thats going around that no one can explain what it is or how to deal with it and that goes for the vets and labs that will bleed you dry trying to find out but come up with nothing that helps we must all look at each others birds as carriers of something no matter whos loft they come from you must take it your birds have been exposed to something everytime there are in a basket with other birds this is the reason everyones birds look great and healthy just now no contact with sick or newly vacinated birdswhich i will come to after i get a wee cuppa

ok guys that more or less covers fitness and if you dont have the time for any of the above your left with the open bowl which takes none of your time but brings its own problems with cats and hawks you can help the cat problem with a cat detector which sends out a high pitch sound only cats can here and works best when the birds are out and continuallybreaking the beam also making traps that dont hold a cats weight but will allow a pigeon to enter none of which are garenteed 100 percent but they both help as to the hawks thats something you have to put up with but the more the birds are out the wiser they get and learn how and when to get out the way like i said before we must think that every time our birds are in contact with others they might be carrying something because this how most of our birds get sick as most on here know i make my own treatment for this problem but there is plenty things you can do to help stop anything spreading through your loft like on training or race days have milton or a teaspoon of thin bleech to a gallon of water let it sit 20 mins then fill the drinkers with it so its the first drink they get when they arrive home most things are spread through the drinkers and will kill off most things in the crop that your birds have picked up in the baskets leave it in the loft till all the birds have had a drink or a few hours have past then replace it if you want there are lots of thush and fungal infections around nowdays to and there is plenty good stuff on the market for this but natural yogurt on the feed every few days will control this and its good for them next feeding you dont have to spend a fortune on the most expensive feed just a normal all purpose mix will do and get yourself a bag of barley to add to it add 10 or 15 percent of the barley to the mix this will help teach you how much feed to give them as they will leave the barley to last and just keep cutting back the amount till they leave nothing as the biggest mistake we all make is over feeding and fat pigeons dont win races if there feeding youngsters keep a pot of mix in each nest box till the yb are weaned this also learns the yb to eat as well as making sure they have plenty to eat next my pet hate vaccination as I am of the opinion that this is where we get most of our viral sickness no matter when you vaccinate do all in the loft at the sametime the reason for doing this is everytime you jag a bird you are bringing the virus into your loft whether the rest have been jagged or not and it takes 14 days to run its course every time you jag a bird so do them all together or all the old birds then all the youngbirds at least before training starts deff no jagging while birds are training or racing so virus can run its course then stop infecting our birds before they are in contact with others or we start the cycle again and again and last but not least observation watch your pigeons every chance you get they will tell you when there ready if they get a prize you want want to know why how they were sitting driving chipping or on a youngster write it down for next time when a bird does well for you stop it its gave you your fun for the year better to have it there for next year and few youngsters off it as risk it the next week to win a few quid its done its bit for you and this is the only way to build a good team of pigeons that will keep you at the top table hope my views help any new starts and have been of interest to the old hands let me know guys
