Guest bigda Posted November 14, 2013 Report Posted November 14, 2013 (edited) Before I commit to starting a loft I would like to know costs of joining a union, club, fed, etc.I have the shed to work on and can use tools . also a local club I live in sandal Wakefield west yorks.I have other sports golf crown green bowling so tight budget as I am a wrinkly or twirley having pigeon i think you would have to give up the bowls as most of that is played in the pigeon season and also when birds are due home, but if you would like a average cost for say 20 birds for the whole season, this would include feeding and fees £600 minimum extra costs can be vets £50 per year buying a clock,£100 but for the whole year once you are up and running £600 per 20 birds play golf and you have to find this kind of money for fees before you play, but pigeons can be spread throughout the year, you can be lucky and get the clock for free, and help with your birds health cheaper, hope this dose not put you of your misses will be happy at times to see more of you instead of the 19th hole but pigeons can bring its own problems, as you soon develop the rubber ear, when asked to go shopping or on holidays when the birds are at a race. but if your neck don't go red, with a blow torch you would be ok with the pigeons Edited November 14, 2013 by bigda

gulkie Posted November 15, 2013 Report Posted November 15, 2013 Sorry mate but if you have to think of costs then don't keep Racing pigeons ,on a brighter note if you were good enough At it they would keep them selfs .costs me a bloody fortune.
1967 Posted November 15, 2013 Report Posted November 15, 2013 Sorry mate but if you have to think of costs then don't keep Racing pigeons ,on a brighter note if you were good enough At it they would keep them selfs .costs me a bloody fortune. In 2011 I kept an eye on what it cost to race pigeons in our club because we had 1 9 year old boy looking to join our club and 5 oaps in club and thought that it was getting a bit expensive for them ie club fees fed fees shu fees membership to main club ets rings £30 carriage to transporter feeding etc .I find that the most asked question from the public now is how much dose it cost to race pigeons Now I have a figure of £44 per bird per year as an answer. Now in our club if you pay £2 per week and sell a football ticket the fees are covered + we are the only club in Scotland you don't even need to send to a race and you get prize money . One prize per loft based over 18 races last prize £3 so even if you don't send you'll get £54 back over the year.Every little helps.I can assure you I have won more than my fair share of pools, prizes, over the years and still do for the birds to pay for themselves.

blue pied Posted November 15, 2013 Report Posted November 15, 2013 our fed fees are £105 per year so averages alot cheaper than you guys per bird! send as many as you like! obv got national fees and RPRA fees plus national birdage and pools... then feeding
Guest bigda Posted November 15, 2013 Report Posted November 15, 2013 I tend to spoil my birds though jags, ets ring, life ring, straw, shavings, vykil,I can only say what it costs me per bird per year its not a competition as who could keep them the cheapest,Could go back to how ma oldman kept them turn the drinker over the day after the last race give them an open bowl and save 22 weeks of feeding as you can read i never included vet bills, medicine the guy asked how much it costs to keep never asked about luxuries, so basically £30 per bird per year in most feds is the figure he can work on
PIGEONPACKMAN Posted November 15, 2013 Report Posted November 15, 2013 I don't know where your local club is i live in hemsworth not too far away and theres a club in kinsley, thomlinson pet suppliers in outwood might be able to guide you on a local club they sell pigeon corn and what have you.Get a few birds see how you go, you dont have to race to start off with .i would be happy to bread you a pair of young birds next year if you wish. All the best what ever you do .
geordie1234 Posted November 15, 2013 Report Posted November 15, 2013 I try not to think about how much it costs me lol frightening sometimes especially for a hobby

If you can do keep them for £30 a year all fine and well but it costs me £44 as for feeding 3/4 oz per bird a day mine would move out

paullock Posted November 15, 2013 Report Posted November 15, 2013 I love my Pigeons but I dislike racing, but I am crap at it so there you go!
peter pandy Posted November 15, 2013 Report Posted November 15, 2013 SHU, Federation, Club fees + 50 life rings = £120. Feed with supplements = £3.92 yearly per single bird.
philg50 Posted November 16, 2013 Report Posted November 16, 2013 Considering the amount it takes to feed a large dog + vets bills etc keeping pigeons is not so expensive a hobby look at golf, fishing etc ,are you a smoker look what they cost a day ,do you drink 3 pints =bag doos food ,try not to put a cost on it keep as many as you can afford ,this could be something that gives a great deal of pleasure so go on enjoy.
Guest langley lad Posted November 16, 2013 Report Posted November 16, 2013 Thanks for the info my plan is to start small and see how it goes .as for racing maybe later it;s just an hobby but it seem expensive .I have been getting the B.H.W.for a couple of months its all doom and gloom and appears to be a rich mans sport now I had a few pigeons when I was a boy and helped out at local fanciers with training and scraping the loft he used to put a couple of my birds in his racing basket for free and most club members was flat cap and muffler working lads how times have changed by wot I read in the B.H.W.O and the golf as to go I need two knew knees regards to all
