just ask me Posted September 17, 2013 Report Posted September 17, 2013 about to begin auctions everywhere only the best been sold etc we have all seen the claims in the rp bhw etc what do you look for when buying in a bird or two to add to your loft should be a good thread for new starters some tips etc
Delboy Posted September 17, 2013 Report Posted September 17, 2013 When Im bringing in a bird, I look at the fancier first. If he is a decent, genuine, honest person then you are on the right track and half way there.
andyyy Posted September 17, 2013 Report Posted September 17, 2013 Agree with looking at the fancier. I like to buy ybs in but if I was to be buying old birds in id be looking at someone packing up, that way you know even the good birds are going. A club member has just decided to pack in and I've just purchased a nice hen of him :-)
geordie1234 Posted September 17, 2013 Report Posted September 17, 2013 It's amazing the guys seem to have no room for these quality pigeons when the season finished? If they were as gd as they claim they wouldn't be getting rid? Always seems to be the same people selling too!!! Few years back due to health reasons one guy was selling most off yet six months later he bred more to sell at a show.... me personally when I look for pigeons it's results and fancier
eastcoaster Posted September 17, 2013 Report Posted September 17, 2013 I agree the fancier or his reputation mean a lot but I try to buy yb's or late breds from as close as possible to the best birds .
blaz Posted September 17, 2013 Report Posted September 17, 2013 if we buy any birds at a sale.1 yb/ob has to look bright eyed and looking very healthy.in the hand it needs to be well balanced with good quality feathers. the breeding needs to be good .as buying a bird in for us we need to think how will it help out in breeding .will it help improve birds going in to race team.the fancier needs to have a good reputation .
Guest IB Posted September 18, 2013 Report Posted September 18, 2013 I think first and most important, do your homework. Look for consistency in the fancier's results over a long period of time, at the distance & level of racing you want to win at. Health and how it is maintained is also important. Health must be genetic rather than pharmaceutic.
just ask me Posted October 1, 2013 Author Report Posted October 1, 2013 wasnt going to buy this year but something has just taken my eye i said the same last year lol
ForestForever74 Posted October 1, 2013 Report Posted October 1, 2013 No buying in this year for us. Got some last years late breds from E & K to breed from next year :-) Local fanciers who are doing well is where people should be looking and of course price is key. Was at a recent sale when the 3 birds I did have an interest in went for £500, £300 and £240. I have expensive tastes so it would seem but not enough to buy at that price.
peter pandy Posted October 1, 2013 Report Posted October 1, 2013 I don't believe any youngster is worth more than £20 purely because their are no guarantee's it will do what it say's on the packet.
Guest darren cantrill Posted October 1, 2013 Report Posted October 1, 2013 we went to dave beswicks sale this time last year and came away with some lovely birds all karel boeckx I was told by friends and others that the boeckx birds were out of date big big mistake bet they wished they hadn't opened their mouths now my bro in law took some top fed positions with some of the youngsters especially out of the older pairs I didn't breed out of the yearlings this year I lost 1 because I didn't vaccinate but it wasn't an entire clearance sale and we picked up some lovley birds that are breeding the goods and they weren't overly expensive we bought a pair that bred Hamilton 10 1st prizes for dave beswick and the pair had bred other top pigeons aswell and have now bred very good pigeons here and were bought for 300 quid got 6 youngsters out of them all still here! and 5 have scored so there are bargains to be had at reduction sales aswell we went for the older stock and backed it up by buying a youngster out of each just in case ive bought pigeons for a lot more money and been totally shafted with crap but its definitely worth a punt at a reduction sale as nobody turns up thinking they are getting sold crap just do your homework on the pigeons and don't spend to much if I could go back a year id of bought every pigeon at that sale
