Anyway lets get back tae the race itself, anyone sending something they're gonna have a Punt on??

Am gonna take a chance way ma old 2008 hen who came out of stock loft retirement this year. She's still keen as mustard on her nest and flying well when out, so a might as well have a wee go as its the last chance saloon for a wee lift this year.emoticon-0157-sun.gifemoticon-0157-sun.gif

John if you can remember at the AGM , because of the cost of last years race ,2 transporters goin to race when 1 would have done ,they said it was because there wasn't enough time to sort baskets etc to send the one lorry and I'm sure it was said and agreed to go a day earlier to cut costs .

Don't see why they just couldn't get a later ferry if they were to miss the boat they are booked on to, from Dover to calaise there ferrys every 2-3 hours. Or if need be then bring forward the marking of all the marking stations by a couple of hours. Better a few hours rather than 24 hours.

Only picked this up today.

Deffo marking Tue 16th July for a Friday race.

The date was changed at a Committee Meeting. Mention was made at AGM that two transporters were sent to Clermont last year when only one was required as there was not enough time to tranship baskets. I'd brought that up at Committee Meeting with the suggestion that we should go on Channel Tunnel Rail Shuttle for that race to give us more time to get birds into one transporter, and get a bit of experience of using the Tunnel. Vote went the other way and basketing was brought forward one day.

Ian, the largest livestock vehicle that can use the channel tunnel is 5.5 tonne, that rules out the SNFC.

I checked this out by email at the beginning of the year. I was specific on the range of vehicles that could be included. Here's my email and Channel Tunnel's reply:-

RE: Racing Pigeon Transporters

Good Afternoon Ian,

Further to your enquiry to transport Race Pigeon's on our Freight Service, I can confirm that we will be to accept this for travel.

I have attached for your reference a disclaimer form, which you will need to complete and return to us via email prior to travel. In addition to this, can you also pre-advice the vehicle registration and the estimated date / time of travel.

We will need a copy of the document and the relevant information to ensure that all Operations teams can be advised of this transport before arrival.

The driver will also need a copy of this at the time of arrival, and please ensure that they have all the documents that you require to transport such animals.

Bookings can be made online at www.eurotunnelfreight.com .

All people travelling will be seated in a club car during transit. As the trains are open, it is not possible to remain with the vehicle for safety reasons. The crossing itself is 35 mins.

All bookings are valid on the booked departure date, and one day either side. You can arrive any time, and we operate 4-5 departures per hour. You will be allocated to the next available departure.

If you need any further assistance, then please do not hesitate to contact us.

Kind Regards,

Zishaun

Subject: Racing Pigeon Transporters

Hi,

I am exploring possibilities for our racing pigeon transporter trucks using Channel Tunnel Shuttle Services. Live racing pigeons would be conveyed on the outward journey to France , and empty pigeon baskets on the return.

The vehicle could be either a 7.5 tonnes rigid van, or an artic under 44 tonnes – just one vehicle per trip. The outward trip would be midweek with the return trip on Friday, Saturday or Sunday of the same week (depending on weather). The Driver would be accompanied by 2 assistants. There would be a maximum of 4 return journeys per year during June / July with the first outward journey June 27th or 28th and the last outward journey July 18th or 19th.

I know that you already carry pigeon transporters and would be pleased to know what conditions apply to their carriage. For example the assistants are there to attend to the birds’ welfare, are they allowed to remain in the truck during the rail journey? I would also like to know what flexibility is allowed in re-booking / ticketing for another train and / or day should the intended train be missed for whatever reason - are the trains open or fully reserved booking?

Please provide a copy of your timetable for the June / July period and fares.

Thank you,

Ian Brown

Ian, :emoticon-0137-clapping: Brilliant to know their policy has now changed, this can only be to the benefit of the national pigeons when used in the future, the flexibility and speed of the euro tunnel could easily have saved a day in the basket for the pigeons at Clermont.

Interesting to find out its cheaper, faster and better in every way to travel through the Channel tunnel than the route we take at the moment. So, why don't we use this facility?

Henrik the sad thing about this whoever decided ta add another day in the baskets to the convoy , were definately not thinking about the welfare of our birds, and should be ashamed of themselves , all ta save a few bob your some subtitutes of men theres hundred thousand pounds + in the bank USE IT ? Iam sure 90% of fanciers want ta see less time in baskets and liberated as early as possible before the oven gets ta the roasting stage and you call yer sels sportsmen i dont think so ?
