Old Bird Wins V Young Bird Wins

think this depends on the family of birds you have ive been lucky in the birds i have win as yb yrl and old birds for example my mealy hen first race as a yb was consett a comeback race over 100 odd miles 8 tosses her and her nestmate 1st club 1st west sect 4 th open allmost 4000 birds north west wind her nestmate was 2nd club 3rd sect 8th open samerace as yrl wanted yb off her so only gave her first 4 races she was 2nd club in the 4th race and scored in fed 160 miles stoped her as 2 yr old 3 races set up for salsburgh 330 miles 1st club 1st sect 12 open fed this year newberry 2nd club 27th sect national then sent to maidstone 4th club beaten bye 3 loft mates but scored 101 sect maidstone and won over 1300 pounds and ive another 3 allmost as good won as yb yrl and old bird so think the family has a lot to do with it but seems if mine are good as yb there good all there life if there good there good imo

sitting hear looking at this thread i have changed my mind and think yb wins are best. well yb racing only 2 weeks away will no dought change my mind next year ^_^

I was talking to someone at Blackpool last year who remarked 'anyone can win a young bird race'

For what it's worth the best old bird racer in our fed is also the best young bird racer

Some guys turn their nose up at young bird racing but they still set their clock? they want to win just as much.

 

Also the arguement off distance v sprint etc bollocks a win is a win

Young bird racing is more about education in my eyes. I've seen plenty of young birds win never to be seen or heard of again, although a wins a win I suppose

I agree with you 100% Geordie if not interested in winning y/b races,why take a clock.

For me a race is a race. I love racing pigeons and we don't get enough races in a year to keep me happy. I personally enjoy racing old birds more but the young bird racing equates to half the season so I make the most of it. I will give some young birds only a couple of races, some will get 4,6 or maybe more.

Young bird racing is far more complex than it used to be and in some cases it can be like oldbird racing. I have some darkness yb's for a bit of fun but I also have naturals and they are left to mature naturally. If there is a race on I want to have a go at winning.

Each to their own, I wish we could have 3 races a week never mind ignore half of the season because 'it is only yb's'.

You must have some amount of doos if you could race 3 times a week, going by what i hear from last year with some fowk having tremendous losses ,good luck to you for 2014.

Phil I keep them to race, I enjoy racing them, I enjoy the anticipation on race days. I personally think it is a short racing season and a long year and yes I would love more races.

 

As for last year, it was a terrific YB season for me, weather was superb, returns were great except for Consett. I dropped 7 at Consett, I lost 5 birds in 7 races sending around 30 per week other than Consett so 12 in total. My thoughts on that are that they were the best trained yb's I have ever had and I didn't have YB sickness.

 

......and no I don't have'some amount of doo's'.
