Guest TAMMY_1 Posted June 25, 2013 Report Posted June 25, 2013 has thare been any evidence of how far a pigeon can actually see my ges is about 80ml that would depend on three things Tam 1- have they got 2 eyes2-have they got contact lenses3-have they been to specsavers :emoticon-0167-beer:
Delboy Posted June 25, 2013 Report Posted June 25, 2013 Pigeon eyesight is excellent. Like humans, pigeons can see colour, but they also can see ultraviolet light – part of the light spectrum that humans can’t see. Pigeons are sometimes used in human search-and-rescue missions because of their exceptional vision.I reckon, like Wiley, they can see around 30 miles.
Tony C Posted June 25, 2013 Report Posted June 25, 2013 Read somewhere a pigeons eyesight is 10x better than that of humans. How far they see depends on how high up they are due to the curvature of the earth. Think Old Hand once wrote a pigeon in flight can see as far as 70 mile.
Guest IB Posted June 25, 2013 Report Posted June 25, 2013 Can't recall having read how far a pigeon can see, but they are said to have much better eyesight than humans and I've read that for other humans with normal vision we can see a candle light on a hillside 11 miles away, I'm about 10 and three quarters miles and more than a candle short of that. IMO pigeons can see the horizon however far that might be, and it must depend on the height they are flying at. Comparing the pigeons eyes and our own, pigeons have two and a half times more fibres in their optic nerve than us, they have stereovision vision forwards, telescopic vision sidewards, and panoramic vision of 340 degrees in front, above and below them. Some scientific wag described pigeons as eyes with wings, and that was back in 1943.
Guest TAMMY_1 Posted June 25, 2013 Report Posted June 25, 2013 like most things in pigeons nobody knows for sure and anything is just one persons guess
jimmydoo Posted June 25, 2013 Report Posted June 25, 2013 I can see the sun, approx 93,000,000 miles away.Reckon pigeons can see that as well.At night I can see some other stars which are much more far away!

DOVEScot Posted June 26, 2013 Report Posted June 26, 2013 On a serious note, the question would be how far can a pigeon see clearly that would be the hard one to answer and would take a scientific study to find out if there is not already one. From a practical engineering point it would depend on how high it could fly giving a trajectory on the earth and considering if it was flat area or mountainous
Guest slugmonkey Posted June 18, 2014 Report Posted June 18, 2014 There was a study done in U.S. by the military on this subject ... pigeons were trained to recognize different colors and when they saw that color they pressed a button and were given a treat for correct responses ... they then put them in a helicopter and tested to see how far away they could see the colored targets ... they saw orange at I believe nearly 40 miles ..... care to guess what color my loft roofs are ....

Interesting, good post.
philg50 Posted June 18, 2014 Report Posted June 18, 2014 Aye but if they can see 30----70 miles how can you lose them in short toss ,or 60 mile race ,do they hate their home ,lost interest in partner,eh well maybe we always say they have got charecter like humans ,but seriously i dont think they do see that distance,or mine didnt this year.
Guest chad3646 Posted June 18, 2014 Report Posted June 18, 2014 i wonder what colour the macs loft roofs are lol
Guest chad3646 Posted June 18, 2014 Report Posted June 18, 2014 maybe there is something in the eye, sign after all
peter pandy Posted June 18, 2014 Report Posted June 18, 2014 On quite a few occasions I have observed my birds suddenly looking skyward when sitting in the veranda and when trying to ascertain what they see when I have been unable to I have lifted my binoculars and looked for what has alarmed them. On most occasions I have managed to spot a dot high in the sky which is not in sight to the naked eye so therefore I would agree that pigeons have superior eye sight to us mere mortals. This leaves the question why are they susceptable to BOP attacks when their eye sight is far superior to ours ?.
Guest bigda Posted June 18, 2014 Report Posted June 18, 2014 (edited) THE PIGEON CAN SEE 30 MILE AVE CLEARLY, BUT THE BOP CAN SEE 80 MILE. AND THAT IS WHY THEY HAVE THE EDGE torra torra torra. Edited June 18, 2014 by bigda

Tony C Posted June 18, 2014 Report Posted June 18, 2014 Pigeons can see BOP's up high but are unable to judge the distance instantly. When you see them looking up head cocked to one side they are trying to ascertain how far away it is. Having eyes on each side of their head they're looking at things on a different plane than how we see things.
