After a couple of weeks debating this question with my old boy I would now like to hear your thoughts??

Are they just a medal of honour?

Are they a sign of weakness?

How many old wifes tales do you know??

Posted

What they mean depends on how the bird acquired them.

In an adult racer they probably show that the bird has been pushed to the limit at the time when the fretted feather was growing.

If they occur in a stock pigeon or youngster which has never had a night away from the loft I would be very suspicious.

Frets on the wing show times of duress, usually during a race, but on the tail, well that's a different matter.

I wonder how many will look at the tail for fret Derek?

the bird has been deprived of food for over 48 hours and has also started burning into the body tissue if a racing fret the feather automatically stops growing for a fewdays . to me battle scar not a sign of weakness to me .

dont like that on the tail usually a sign of bird being ill at some point

no my cuppa tea those ones .

That's the only place to look Stephen, imo.

I would have thought that the fretted tail, as Rab said, would have not been an issue for long?? If ye catch my drift? certainly not when entering the basket LOL?

Don't think ye will get many doos scoring from 500 miles with a fretted tail, but plenty score with fretted wings. Now do you get my drift m8. In Belgium, the top fanciers don't look at the wing, only the tail.

Would you ever consider pulling a fretted wing flight?

Jock Jamieson told me he never bothered looking at wing, others said it was a must for the distance??

i wouldnt pull fretted flight unless it had brocken or was breaking at the fret , apart from that leave well alone .

Jock was spot on.The only concern in the wing is when the bird has cast its 5th flight, this is when the big moult is about to kick in. Pulling a flight is a deffo no no. Did ye know that pulling a flight is more painful to a pigeon than putting a scalpel through its chest.

NAh i aint 100% on Jock being 100% lol. ye not too fussed about gaps with double throws but not too keen on to far thru? No pulling is not really an option but if some of the old tales are to be believed then some might!!!

Here's a wee TRUE story.

Su 97 L 19697 was a Blue Cheq hen, who when she left the nest, had Fret marks in 3 places across her tail. There were Pin feathers sticking out of it everywhere. The flights were "washed out" looking and she was generally a sorry looking excuse for a Racing pigeon. One day my Da and ma self were admiring the team in the loft when i piped up "see that thing we'd be as well rid of it" to which came the reply "just leave it where it is, it's not doing any harm" i argued that it took the good look off the team but my Da was having none of it and it was left alone.

In the final race of the season she topped the Fed, Gulkie split our first 2 doos that day or we would have been 1st + 2nd Open. Her velocity was 992ypm and Gulkies doo was on 956 with our 2nd bird doing 954 so i was No walk in the park race. 4 yrs later in 2001 she was 3rd West Section SNFC Hastings.

My Point is...............maybe we're no as clever as we like tae think we are!!

Aye yer right John, but I can guarantee yer wee hen had a great moult before she won 3rd west section SNFC.

She never had a bad moult Derek but the Velocity of the Fed race was way lower than the SNFC race, imo her best performance was in the Yb race.

However i take your point because on the day she won the Yb race i had my cash on another Stunning looking Blue Cheq hen 19696 and when 97 dropped that day i was so excited i mistakenly declared 96 had done it. Not until my Da picked her up did i know it was in fact 97. She had moulted her Nest feathers and was a Swan compared to the Ugly duckling that left the nest.

Ps. How many would survive in almost ANY loft if they turned out of the nest in that condition?? Not Many i'd say!! which i suppose was my point in the first placeemoticon-0138-thinking.gifemoticon-0138-thinking.gif

I had a pair of ybs that were badly reared. Unlike me and against the book, I decided to see how they turned out after going through the darkness system and renewing their body feathers. Kirkintilloch had a points cup for Ybs, the 2 ybs were 1st and 2nd in the yb points cup, both never out the top 10.Every days a school day. :emoticon-0138-thinking: Mind ye, theres no way they would score in the SNFC oB NATS with a bad moult, omo.

Would have to agree with ye there Derek, hard enough to win with doos that have had a perfect moult let alone those who've moulted poorly.
