Raw Redskin Peanuts & Aflatoxin/Mould

I have read that raw peanuts can contain aflatoxin/mould which can be harmful to pigeons. In Europe the amount of aflatoxin permissible is however regulated e.g., "For the protection of animals the EEC has implemented guidelines concerning the percentages of aflatoxin in the feed. The latest EEC guidelines, implemented in 1981, allow a percentage of 0.05 mg/kg when peanuts are retailed loose"

I reside in South Africa, and i am sure that the aflatoxin levels in South Africa are not regulated. My problem is this, i would so much love to give my pigeons raw peanuts for the longer distance races, but i am to scared to do it because of the harm that aflatoxin/mould does.

Can I overcome this problem by buying shelled raw peanuts and placing them in the microwave or oven for a few minutes to destroy the mould? Does roasted redskin peanuts have any value for the pigeons? :emoticon-0138-thinking:

To be on the safe side buy them from a supermarket or health shop. Only feed peanuts fit for human consumption. An alternative is sunflower hearts (shelled sunflower seeds).

Going to get my self in trouble with other p/b members but any feed you are giving your pigeons and you think

Mould is going to be a problem just add cider vinegar to it . And this is jmo :animatedpigeons:

I don't see any point in microwaving - peanuts meant for human consumption are mould-free, buy them.

years ago they did a survey on british birds that fed of the garden feeders, they found out the birds that were feeding on the peanuts that were not fit for human consumption there crop,s were so compact with a yellow substance that the died, so beware what kind of peanuts you put in them
