DO NOT INGNORE THESE CLOWNS. i have just read a right load of crap these people are spouting (the birds being transpoted for seven days, millions of pounds being bet and 90 per cent not returning and sending them 900 miles) and they have an online petition for people to sign for some minister. This PETA Article has been a long time coming. I've thought they would start for quite a while as they don't like anyone keeping animals for pleasure.

When you read the article on line and watch the accompanying videos we have little defence As a whole they are pretty much reflect what has been happening in the sport, gambling and duration in the transporter excepted. Guys with responsible positions in the racing fraternity have admitted the losses, largely blaming the channel. Guys online have shown how fanciers cull the birds and we can't deny selection at the end of the season, if there is a surplus of birds in the loft. Someone's going to have to be very clever with the defence. It's probably not only PETA, but the RSPCA we need to worry about because with 40,000 fanciers all with lofts in the back garden it could get pretty awkward as we are a large community easily policed.

 

I packed up a few years ago and after taking my two teenagers to Blackpool for the 1st time this year (myself included) I am looking forward to getting back to pigeons later this year. I really hope this doesn't take hold and destroy a wonderful sport.

 

I've got to be honest, living in the south, I've rarely raced the channel and always preferred North road racing, if it was available, as I never liked the thought of my birds getting into trouble over it and seeing the video with loads of pigeons trying to get off the water wasn't particularly good pr for channel racing.

The question of the transporters is currently the most vital part of this whole discussion.The transporters have got to be spot on with no overcrowding and all birds must have access to food and water also the very best weather forecasts must be obtained, holdovers must be avoided where possible and in the event of a prolonged poor weather forecast races cancelled.All birds must be vaccinated (they should be anyway) and the convoyer must have the necessary documentation.Believe me if they stop a transporter they will go through it with a fine tooth comb.

The BBC have had a reporter looking into the arguements of PETA. It's conclusion at the end includes a statement from the RSPCA that they feel this is not their territory. So just PETA pushing for the ban at the present time!

 

Although no one, in high office can afford to ignore this, maybe there will be a few good years at least to continue enjoying our sport.

Didn't want to cloud issues but PETA are an American organisation and have caused problems for AU for years. Racing pigeons over there is completely different to racing pigeons here in the UK. Here, whether we like it or not, pigeon racing is authorised by the UK and devolved Governments - we do it under Licence. It is these Governements - not doogooders and certainly not PETA - which have banned cruel sports like fox hunting, and other practices widely seen as uqually barbaric like using snares and certain types of traps to catch wild animals, and this has been done largely to reflect public opinion of the time.

 

So Government has banned cruel sports, but as it licences pigeon racing it follows that is not seen as cruel - and it is up to all pigeon fanciers to make sure that it stays that way by behaving at all times in a way which does not bring pigeon racing into disrepute, nor attract unwelcome public attention.

the point isif it ever came to Parliament and the government looked at all the facts and made an informed decision on the evidence like there supposed to there would be no problem

There is an article in theObserver magazine about PETA and its founder Ingrid Newmark .well worth a read, she is 63years old and has been a animal advocate (fanatic) all her life with an enormous following in America, she claims to have been instrumental in halting the fur trade in Europe and the States.She gets up to all sorts of tricks and is quite single minded in he pursuit of what she sees as animal a users,she once went into a fashionable restaurant in Manhattan and threw a dead racoon on the table in front of a fashion columnist who promptly covered the animal with a napkin and called for coffee.Newmark then was escorted from the restaurant to the accompaniment oh TV cameras etc.I have changed my mind on this a wee bit and I do not think PETA is as big a threat to the pigeon fancy as I at first thought but they will still bear watching.
