Guest snowy2011 Posted June 20, 2012 Report Posted June 20, 2012 Hi have been thinking for sometime now about which products are rubbish and what products are a must? Me myself I don't treat not for canker or anything I have them tested befor brreading and then befor racing, BUT if I needed to I would but luckily I havnt had to so far but I hear of so many people using products evry week I can't see this to be a gd thing. But I might be wrong is there anyone to point me in the right direction on what products I should use during racing or am I doing the right thing by not treating?Has anyone used avierform resperitry? Is it any good Thank you

Wiley Posted June 20, 2012 Report Posted June 20, 2012 I'm a big fan of The Gem supplements especially Strike 2
Guest Owen Posted June 20, 2012 Report Posted June 20, 2012 In the past I have used supplements but most of it is a waste of money. These days I use chopped fresh garlic, lugols iodine, and cinnamon. I check the droppings and swabs once a fortnight and go from there.I never feed more that 10% of brown skinned grain and never ever have the birds hungry with the exception of the youngsters when they are learning about discipline because they have to trap when they are asked to do and they must never land anywhere other than the trapping area of the loft. The most valuable supplement you can use with pigeons is fresh grit every day and all the sunshine possible. You will know when you are doing it right because all your birds will fly well and not the one or two that a lot of lofts rely on.

To keep canker levels low I give them Impact by Gem twice a week and thats about it.

Tony C Posted June 20, 2012 Report Posted June 20, 2012 Tony is the impact a b12 based supplement? Yes, also contains Iodine which I believe keeps canker at bay.
Wiley Posted June 20, 2012 Report Posted June 20, 2012 Yes, also contains Iodine which I believe keeps canker at bay. Been considering using for a while as we use cytacon b12 regularly here

Guest Owen Posted June 22, 2012 Report Posted June 22, 2012 budgieI use fresh chopped garlic 3/4 times each week. I chop it and put it into cold water overnight and use it fresh every day. I think that heat ruins garlic so I would not follow the advice that I have seen where steeping it in hot water is recommended. In regard to the use of iodine or iodine products. It comes into it's own if you use strong medication such as antibiotics. Often after you have treated with this sort of thing you will have yeast as a secondary infection. The usual treatment is Nystatine which is a product for humans and something I do not think is very helpful because it leaves you with further problems. Iodine is a great help with yeast and garlic also helps to control it. I believe that yeast is the kind of nasty infection that can go undetected but will ruin the birds chances so I always take steps to control it and I never use antibiotics these days. In regard to using manufactured products. I would not do that because I would rather understand what active ingredients are involved and use them. For example Lugols or Aqueous Iodine is very cheap to buy and is ideal for use with livestock. It can be bought from the local Chemist and is produced at a very high standard for humans.A lot of Veterinary products are deliberately overpriced and were originally made for humans and the same sort of thing goes for pigeon specifics. The one thing that I have become aware of in recent times is the fact that many things that are in current use are unsuitable for pigeons. Yogurt is one. Pigeons do not have the enzymes to deal with this supplement so it is a wast of time feeding it to them. Worse still is the fact that while you are hoping that the Yogurt will help with YBS you are actually wasting valuable time as the birds deteriorate.
blackdog Posted June 22, 2012 Report Posted June 22, 2012 anyone used cinnamon on its own in the water, if so, how much into how much water?
dwh Posted June 22, 2012 Report Posted June 22, 2012 EVERYTHING BUT CHEMOTHERPY :emoticon-0136-giggle: MIND YOU LOOKING @ THE COLOUR THE WATER GOES WHEN YOU ADD SOME OF THESE SO CALLED MIRICLE WORKERS THEY COULD BE RADIOACTIVE :o
greenlands Posted June 22, 2012 Report Posted June 22, 2012 anyone used cinnamon on its own in the water, if so, how much into how much water?Think it will be better on the feed mate, reason for that It either floats or sinks and does not mix. Mine are on Primalac at the mo.just getting over YBS.
JohnQuinn Posted June 23, 2012 Report Posted June 23, 2012 I have a 100Ltr water tank out at the lofts. I throw in a pack of 3 garlic bulbs to a full tank and leave them there, topping up the water as needed, until they have almost dissolved. About 2/3 days before i take it out i put in a new pack of 3.For all the good its doing them i know its not doing any harm so i will stick with it. This season for the first time ever i treated my racers for Canker, because a man i have great respect for advised me that it was a MUST to treat for. Have to say it hasn't shown any significant improvement in the condition or performance level of the birds so i'll go back to leaving well alone and keep ma £26,00.
Guest robscott Posted July 9, 2012 Report Posted July 9, 2012 i never liked the idea of treating whilst racing.treat before season starts get droppings tested 2-3 weeks before 1st race,if all clear then leave well alone.i tell ya what i did like to use during season, got nothing to do with treating/medication RED CELL great great stuff, race horse trainers use it.
