budgie Posted January 2, 2012 Report Posted January 2, 2012 What are the advantages/dis-advantages of early winter breeding.
Guest WINGS 04 Posted January 2, 2012 Report Posted January 2, 2012 There is no advantage all you are doing is feeding them for 3 months longer than you need to
Kyleakin Lofts Posted January 2, 2012 Report Posted January 2, 2012 Advantages are strong early bred young birds for racing and / or early training before hawkfest. Allowing your OB's torear in plenty of time before widowhood racing begins.Disadvantages could be YB's falling to bits too early if the moult goes wrong and the same with OB's. If racing natural, too early a start. YB's growing without the sun on their backs.
harky Posted January 2, 2012 Report Posted January 2, 2012 You will know the answer to that Andy, Rab your right .
THE FIFER Posted January 2, 2012 Report Posted January 2, 2012 do you not lose some chilled eggs, if its very cold ,

Novice Posted January 2, 2012 Report Posted January 2, 2012 Given the traditional race programs we are subject to there is little advantage in rearing early young birds. However if we were to really get our thinking caps on and design a program with youngbird racing finishing before August when Percy is training his young to kill pigeons then there would be a huge advantage associated with everyone breeding early young.
just ask me Posted January 2, 2012 Report Posted January 2, 2012 i dont see any advantage in early breeding at all pairing them up later and sticking them on the darkness a better option i can see why they pair up early in belg etc with there race program but cant see why here

gulkie Posted January 3, 2012 Report Posted January 3, 2012 its not natural to have young in the nest an snow on the ground :emoticon-0138-thinking: :emoticon-0138-thinking:
Blue Chequer Pied Posted January 3, 2012 Report Posted January 3, 2012 Biggest disadvantage for me is that the early youngsters get murdered by sparrowhawks in February/March when fluttering about the roof. Even if it does not kill them it scatters them and they end up all over the place before they know how to go in and out. Paired up 10th of January 3 years ago in my first season back in the sport and won't do it again for that one reason.
THE FIFER Posted January 4, 2012 Report Posted January 4, 2012 Andys lofts have central heating . That would take care of the cold weather then, good
Guest KING BILLY Posted January 4, 2012 Report Posted January 4, 2012 Andys lofts have central heating . and a loft manager whos thare to turn the eggs and a dog that gets the hard boiled ones lol
Guest Quarry Lofts Posted January 4, 2012 Report Posted January 4, 2012 There is only one real advantage if things go wrong you have plenty time to recoverif you breed later and things go wrong its curtains as far as winning goes older bred race no better than later bred ybs depending on how you race them if you wanna race them paired up as ybs id opt for older bred as they will be more sexually muture and will pair more easilyjimmy
Tony C Posted January 4, 2012 Report Posted January 4, 2012 I found going back through my records that hardly any early bred youngsters made super old birds.
budgie Posted January 4, 2012 Author Report Posted January 4, 2012 Thanks guys for your response and to the Part Time Dooman.
