OLDYELLOW Posted December 7, 2011 Report Posted December 7, 2011 Prescription only medicine you need to be prescribed it from a qualified vet
shugf2003 Posted December 8, 2011 Report Posted December 8, 2011 So This somwherePalatable and easy to administer but rarely effective against the bacterial organisms that effect birds.
Novice Posted December 8, 2011 Report Posted December 8, 2011 At one point in time Amoxycillin was licenced for use on pigeons. At that point it was the only product with this consent. The company which did this was Vetrepharm.I have no idea if they are still in buisness or not.
dwh Posted December 8, 2011 Report Posted December 8, 2011 So This somwherePalatable and easy to administer but rarely effective against the bacterial organisms that effect birds.recommended for use against staffloccus [spelling] infections

peter pandy Posted December 10, 2011 Report Posted December 10, 2011 Don't think you went near a vet as he would have supplied you and their would be no need to ask. I think this is another case of treating blind with a product unfit for racing pigeons.
Guest strapper Posted December 10, 2011 Report Posted December 10, 2011 just to set your mind at rest about using amoxicillin... Name: Amoxicillin Trihydrate (Amoxil, Amoxi-drops, many others.) •Description: Amoxicillin is a semisynthetic analog of penicillin with a broad range of bacterial activity against many gram + and gram - bacteria. •Usage: Amoxicillin can be used with any bacterial infection showing susceptibility to the drug. •Adverse reactions: None seen with any frequency. •Dosage: 25 - 50 mg/Bird divided daily or 1500 - 3000 mg/gallon of water for 10 - 14 days. •Comments: Amoxicillin is very effective, well absorbed, safe, and well tolerated in the pigeon.
peter pandy Posted December 10, 2011 Report Posted December 10, 2011 Augmentin, Amoxicillin was quite an interesting read in as much as I never read where it could be given to a 14 oz pigeon. The dose reccomended for an adult human is 25 mg and here we have a fancier with 650 mg tablets what are we dosing ? an elephant !!!.I dont wish to offend BUT this particular anti biotic should be used only to treat infections THAT ARE PROVEN.

REDCHEQHEN Posted December 11, 2011 Report Posted December 11, 2011 Augmentin, Amoxicillin was quite an interesting read in as much as I never read where it could be given to a 14 oz pigeon. The dose reccomended for an adult human is 25 mg and here we have a fancier with 650 mg tablets what are we dosing ? an elephant !!!.I dont wish to offend BUT this particular anti biotic should be used only to treat infections THAT ARE PROVEN. Adult:The adult dose for AUGMENTIN is one or two AUGMENTIN 375 tablet(s) every eight hours at the start of a meal. For more severe infections and infection of the respiratory tract, the dose should be one AUGMENTIN 625 tablet every eight hours at the start of a meal, or one AUGMENTIN BD tablet every 12 hours at the start of a meal.Since AUGMENTIN 375, 625 and BD tablets contain the same amount of clavulanic acid (125 mg, as the potassium salt), two AUGMENTIN 375 tablets are not equivalent to one AUGMENTIN 625 tablet, and two AUGMENTIN 625 tablets are not equivalent to one AUGMENTIN BD. Therefore, two AUGMENTIN 375 tablets should not be substituted for one AUGMENTIN 625 tablet or two AUGMENTIN 625 tablets for one AUGMENTIN BD tablet for the treatment of more severe infections
peter pandy Posted December 11, 2011 Report Posted December 11, 2011 I based what I posted taken from "augmentin.org/" to be more knowledgeable as I assume they are the makers of the drug and have missread a most important part however I will now rectify it.Dosage for a 14oz pigeon is 10.5mg. This is based on a child weighing 2.2 lb being given 45mg the recommended dose.Their are warnings of side affects including convulsions however the most important of the special warning's are that augmentin kills all bacteria GOOD & BAD in the system.

peter pandy Posted December 11, 2011 Report Posted December 11, 2011 Dont give yoghurt but do use live bacteria from Flight Path once a month and never give antibiotics nor use multivitamins !. If they cannot get their needs from feed then something wrong with bird and bucket it. Have we never noticed that our best birds always look great their entire life.

Have we never noticed that our best birds always look great their entire life. peter as much as i respect your view i have to dissagree with best birds statement...i had an hen who was 7th fed 18th fed as a yb and was 15th fed old birds from over(250)mls over the water...plus several club cards...but eventually lost in a smash. this hen as a youngbird went down and after a course of meds she was back up bouncing...then she was raced and scored as above. peanut ..my past good race hen had youngbird sickness and a bad canker problem..which was treated...just to mention one race... she was 20th combine out of just slightly under 10,000 birds from france. i would never use the bucket unless its obvious its not gonna be as it was.but as i said i respect your view as everyone has their own opinion..which we all are entitled too

Tony C Posted December 12, 2011 Report Posted December 12, 2011 Amoxicillin has its place in the pigeon game. It is the favoured drug to combat Streptococci infections (which by the way is on the increase).
peter pandy Posted December 13, 2011 Report Posted December 13, 2011 DWH. My pool bird is very rarely beaten by a loft mate and very few in a race no matter the distance.Regarding Amoxicillan, perhaps because of misuse by this drug and others our birds have lost their immunity. well maybe your's have but mine and others I have had the pleasure of looking after have never experienced y/b sickness nor many of the ailments posted on Basics.
