yeboah Posted September 20, 2010 Report Posted September 20, 2010 If you look at the guys who have dominated the young bird national for the past few years a lot of their pigeons are NEHU rung and race with the Up North Combine. How far does that make their first young bird race?and how far would Lanarkshires first race down the West need to be to jump the "danger zone"? Lanarkshire could start at Lockerbie or Longtown ,then have a Appleby or Stainmore then jump to Appleton which would be a jump of nearly seventy miles ,my first race from Appleby Shap OR Stainmore back to Moffat is 70 Miles so no Probs there
Rooster J. Cogburn Posted September 20, 2010 Report Posted September 20, 2010 Yip the jump might be the answer after one or two Lockerbie/Longtowns.The pigeons will do it I suppose if they're getting away with a clean start.A jump would maybe help down the east route as well. From what you read on here a lot people seem to think theres a danger zone to be avoided down that side also. The folk who race with the Up North Combines first race will be near enough as far as some feds YB open race but suppose they'll be getting a good help for the first half and a bit of the race.
HOMER49 Posted September 20, 2010 Report Posted September 20, 2010 HiAfter old birds 2008 down the west I will never race a fullprogram down the west againAnybody thats interested South Lanarkshire I believe will nowtake trainers down the EASTTHATS WHERE MINES WILL BECheersHomer 49

Have no worries jumping my own birds from stainmore 76 mls to appleton 142 mls ,have jumped young birds from 76 miles with the fed to 180 miles with anglo scottish and got eighty to ninety percent home , distance no problem to fit healthy birds its where they are let of , thats the danger . All the best for 2011 .

I dont think that signing a five year contract if you like is a very flexible arrangement. If cicumstances changed wae the snfc and they came back west and we were east with no possibility of change then no practical for me walter. The positive is that everybody would know exactly wot was going on and the yearling birds would be on the same route as they wer as babies.
gulkie Posted September 21, 2010 Report Posted September 21, 2010 nobody seems to have mentioned clashing I think most feds north and southrace up and down the east coast.spread the racing across the country and iam sure racing will improve, bops are here to stay and we will just have to livewith it and hope for a really hard winter that'll kill the baskets off.

There was a fear factor with regards to racing the young birds down the west route in 2008 and this was the turning point for changing back to the east, there were reports that came from Midland Fanciers who year after year were getting hammered from race points like Crawford etc with young birds which is right amongst the hills, since then it has been thought that with the concious efforts to deal with our feathered cousins and selecting race points on flatter clearer lands that racing is if not better then at least equal to liberating down the east. In 2008 if i am correct the first 5 races were east winds and the experienced yearlings and 2 year olds found it no problem but as with any racing whether that be east or west those fanciers that did not race young birds the year before suffered with major losses. My own club the other night had a end of season meeting were it was discussed were they wanted to fly in 2011 and all but one of the 16 members present felt that the racing down the east was not worth it any more and are all wanting for Lanarkshire to liberate on the west of the Pennines in the coming season.
Guest bigda Posted September 21, 2010 Report Posted September 21, 2010 i think appleby is far to close to the solway, and remember scotch corner ain't that far from it either , this area around here, down to as far as Lancaster is a big troublearea for releasing doos, its not the distance its the birds getting libbed there attracts the BOP in there thousands, by the time the birds get there Bering's and lift they are under attack, we need now be at leased 100 mile further on than Lancaster to allow the birds to have there wits about them, and coming up the road by that i mean coming in a thin line, not a big batch, where most of the doos that are scared, only adding to the problem, as they create a panic among the braver birds, take 4 race otterburn with west winds on there beaks then as i have said before jump the lot into Leicester have an open for the yearling's and for the older birds on the same day then 25-50 mile all the way out to France it is quoted as there are 60,000 peregrines in the UK and that dose not count the 1year and 2year olds that haven't bred as yet, now i believe there are 3,000 just in the solway area and they all want just the one bird thats 3,000 birds missing in any one day of a race around that area alone, the reason i draw my conclusion as not to let birds go around there, is the birds must be in to big a batch as there are to many birds 1 not returning and 2 my main point is there are a very high percentage of birds returning with feathers missing to suggest other wise if there is any one out there able to sumerise it better than me then i am all ears bigda as is

Would you single toss westbound Versatile from mofffat or that area?

Hi JimTrained from the east and had a hell of a time this year when preparing my doos for the channel, the barstwerds are every where and we must as other forum members have suggested we have to get of our arses and deal with them, we cant run from them any more those days are gone now.Training in 2011 who knows, hopefully it will be Beattock and Moffatt and that area ,
Guest TAMMY_1 Posted September 21, 2010 Report Posted September 21, 2010 the problem would be with such a big jump is you would need to make sure your birds raced appleton if not its some jump 115 miles Hi mate, our first young bird race is sometimes 101 miles or so ,and that makes us jump from nothing to over 100 miles the first year we raced I was a bit nervous of starting so far because with Lanarkshire we started a lot shorter than that but my fears were unfounded as we had great returns from the long first race so now we have no worries about how far the young birds jump, this year we won the first y/bird race by quite a fair bit and were always in the shake up after that so now we look forward to starting at 100 miles or so and good luck to you Frank for next year .
