depends what you want them for geo to breed off or race next year as old birds mate?

Well I was told that late breds this year won't stand a chance against old birds next year so not sure what's best to do

.

There is some truth in that, but to get the best out of them and prepare them to be good 2yr olds, you should race them as yearlings. I wouldn't keep them for stock but would breed from them. The best of them will still be there the next year to take more from. ;)

'Latebred' can mean different things, depending on when that fanciers 'normal' breeding season begins. You may actually be getting later bred pigeons that are hatched just a few weeks too late to catch the YB racing. Check out what month they hatch(ed). Try to get them trained this year. You will then have a better chance racing them as yearlings in 2011, but start them in May when the weather is kinder - they are notoriously difficult to train & race in colder weather March / April - they seem to go down like ninepins then, don't know why.

Go round to the nearest fancier to your loft and he'll keep you right. All the Best :)

Just train em out to 10 mile. Breed from 'em in the spring. Start to train 'em in May and give 'em a few races from June as old birds. They will give you a good start if you can wait this long. Patience with late breds.
