alec guinness Posted December 30, 2008 Report Posted December 30, 2008 in the 50s the local laird had a curling tournament for the villagers on the local loch and at half time the cook from the "big hoose" would come on to the ice in a horse and cart with hot soups & rolls for all.very very cold. :) :) :)
Geraint Parry Posted December 31, 2008 Report Posted December 31, 2008 Cold out there this morning, car running for at least 20 mins heaters on. Still Frozen solid. Will have to go check the drinkers in the aviary's as soon as dawn breaks.

But the only change I've made is to leave barley out of their mix (since Monday week), feeding an ounce of breeders mix per bird. Question: does anyone know if pigeons are the same as wild birds in that their metabolism slows during colder weather? Don't know the temperature that triggers this, but it's 1% fall for every 1C fall. ? ? Would mean that in 'lower temperatures' we should feed same or less, but certainly not more.

I would let the pigeons be the judge of that. You cant expect to get pigeons conditioned for breeding by keeping them short of food, would a shortage of food effect their hormones too?
bewted Posted December 31, 2008 Report Posted December 31, 2008 only real bad weather i know of was in 1963 i believe,,,,now that was a cold snowy year for everyone, only time i know bedford here to come to standstill because of it all and just after blizzards and everything stopped,it went to freezing that much you could walk on top of 2,3,4 foot of snow without falling through it !!! also that year could walk all over fishing grounds on ice anywhere for a good week or more, never have seen anything like it since then !!
Guest strapper Posted December 31, 2008 Report Posted December 31, 2008 glad i missed it...i was born in 64....maybe they froze me out lol

Not suggesting keeping birds short of food - and I've never done it. What I was asking was do pigeons have the same mechanism that wild birds have that helps them survive through the coldest spells? As I understand it, low temperatures cause the birds body systems to slow down, so conserving energy loss. There's also less food available to wild birds at these times, but what little there is for them still provides each bird with all the energy it needs, because the body uses less.
