micko and jack Posted February 27, 2009 Report Posted February 27, 2009 they are pets to me i know they shouldnt be very hard to let any go have to put my hands up to this one just like grasshopper PETS when you see the fantails out and about its a lovely site i really try my best giving birds away (and ALLWAYS for free) but you go to put another bird in a hamper you have a second look and say to yourself NO NOT THAT ONE it really is hard at times i remember as a kid keeping tipplers with my brother 35 years ago we lived in the tenth floor of a 12 story high rise we had a space behind the balcony door about 3x3 and about 4' high thats were we had our loft with about 12 /16 birds in it the perchs/nest-boxes were wooden beer creats the ones that had a wooden center divider (older members will remember them) and we nailed a piece of 2x1 or just whatever we could find across the front with sawdust in it was scraped very day and washed out with bleach once a week birds checked for canker and lice that was it easier than keeping birds now days some may think what where they at i was about 9/10 my older brother 13/14 but it give us many many years of enjoyment and happy flying thats why i want jack to have birds better that than standing on a street corner drinking or abusing older people when hes older check the post if your building a new loft please not one like this and you will hear of people flying from dog boxes coal boxes

wayne77 Posted February 28, 2009 Report Posted February 28, 2009 I will join the too many group as well, but this season will sort that out. The costs are too high and the time taken is too much, cannot be successful looking after the mob ;D then again maybe same answer this time next year ;D
Guest Posted February 28, 2009 Report Posted February 28, 2009 i'd say 99% do. Tell you what go to your loft tomorrow and write down the ring numbers of every bird you have without looking, if you cant you have too many!! Its a fact i used to keep 24 pair racers and sometimes 18 pair of stock. I had the worse possible start to any season around late 90's. Last or nearly last. On the sunday morning i went thru every pigeon i had, the whole lot, by the end of the day i had less than 30 birds in the sheds. Some of these had cost 100's some had won cards, but some or most were pure free loaders. My cousin stared in disbelief at the bin i had, full to the brim, he picked 3 out all yearlings, he queried if i had lost the plot!! Within 2 weeks and until the rest of the season i was arerly out the top 4! Did not dawn on me til that day it was like trying to drive 3 cars at once, may suit some but you have to have a saturation point!
Guest The main Mahon Posted February 28, 2009 Report Posted February 28, 2009 i've only got 17 birds in the loft but that's still too many there are probably half of those that don't really deserve to be there. But it would be very strange having a loft with only 8 or 10 birds left in it. I think we as fanciers try and fill the spare boxes or perches with the average birds that really should be got rid of. If we are honest, I think we are all guilty of that.
kirky Posted February 28, 2009 Report Posted February 28, 2009 last winter i had 120 birds i cut them down to 60, now with young birds im back to the 120 so mutch for cutting down.
ALF Posted February 28, 2009 Report Posted February 28, 2009 Personally i have got rid of ( in the bin ) 45 doos since the end of the racing...
Guest cloudview Posted February 28, 2009 Report Posted February 28, 2009 yes im guilty as well , this time of year is when loft is at maximum numbers , but a few months down the line ,afew channel races under the belt and then things start to even out a bit . the basket sorts mine out every year without fail ,

REDCHEQHEN Posted February 28, 2009 Report Posted February 28, 2009 i'd say 99% do. Tell you what go to your loft tomorrow and write down the ring numbers of every bird you have without looking, if you cant you have too many!! I know all the ring numbers of my birds without going down to the loft and know what colour they are - and know which boxes each one is in I also know the ring numbers of the parents that bred them without looking them up (or the name of the person who bred them if we didn't) is that sad
Guest Posted February 28, 2009 Report Posted February 28, 2009 cutting down by 8 boxes next year some of those average birds always seem to surprise you and perform well as they mature you never know you might be getting rid of some of your best birds if they havnt shown early on i let the basket keep my numbers down with the raceing weve had thats no problem
