Guest Posted July 29, 2009 Report Posted July 29, 2009 youngbirds all roughly same age , have been treated accordingly . having enough food , maturing well , but hardly flying at all . looking for pointers not criticsm ,thanks in advance . andy.
Frazer Posted July 29, 2009 Report Posted July 29, 2009 Mate had the same problem droppings were good etc sent away for a test and came back with a slight respiratory problem treated for seven days and are flying a lot better not saying thats your problem but you might want to get them tested.
Darnaway Posted July 29, 2009 Report Posted July 29, 2009 Certainly get them tested as you might find they have a yeast infection . To be honest you need the results of the tests to let you deal with whatever is causing the problem, Is this the first time your youngsters have been like this ?
peterpau Posted July 29, 2009 Report Posted July 29, 2009 Cocci Kanker and Worms would be the first things I'd be looking for
Guest GRIZZLE GRAHAM Posted July 29, 2009 Report Posted July 29, 2009 DO YOU THINK THEY MIGHT HAVE BEEN OVER FED, HEAVY BIRDS WILL NOT FLY MUCH, JUST LIKE FAT PEOPLE DONT RUN MUCH, TRY THEM ON BARLEY FOR A FEW DAYS.
Guest briancol Posted July 29, 2009 Report Posted July 29, 2009 my birds are the same, they seem healthy enough at the minute except they fly for 3,4,5 minutes and come down panting with wings dropped as if theyve just flown for hours. some of them not all. 16 birds is all i have, recently had a dropping test down and found to be clear of, cocci, worms and hairworms,. dont think theres any canker in the loft so must be respiratory. but getting doxycycline is like getting hens teeth, i just cant get it and i cant afford to be running to vet.
Roland Posted July 29, 2009 Report Posted July 29, 2009 DO YOU THINK THEY MIGHT HAVE BEEN OVER FED, HEAVY BIRDS WILL NOT FLY MUCH, JUST LIKE FAT PEOPLE DONT RUN MUCH, TRY THEM ON BARLEY FOR A FEW DAYS. iJust beat me.... Lighten the feed a mite. Want then a bite hungry. Send then up the road. I was having 50% ranging and flying well ... till started hanging about... the other 50% did nowt much. Some just flew a couple times, second away ... But started - to send up the road and all have a bit of zip now.
REDCHEQHEN Posted July 29, 2009 Report Posted July 29, 2009 Could be a few things - they're reluctant to fly also - when they're showing and pairing up if the sexes haven't been split
Guest Posted July 29, 2009 Report Posted July 29, 2009 thanks for the replies so far , they have had cocci , canker and worm treatment at spaced intervals before bieng trained (had multivits after each session) all look really well ,droppings ok . none are panting even after return from last saturdays race . feed is a little on the lite side , due to me wanting control ,fast - traps and miserable neighbour who complains if out . have put one nestbowl in tonight (so thay not spooked by it) 5 more bowls in tommorow after 30 mile trainer . the sexes have not been split. thanks again . andy.
DAVIDL Posted July 29, 2009 Report Posted July 29, 2009 DO YOU THINK THEY MIGHT HAVE BEEN OVER FED, HEAVY BIRDS WILL NOT FLY MUCH, JUST LIKE FAT PEOPLE DONT RUN MUCH, TRY THEM ON BARLEY FOR A FEW DAYS. agree with this, it could be they are overwieght.......or that they are pairing up, as my ybs last year went like this when they were starting to pair up. also found when ybs are in moult they might be sore so dont want to fly much. have the birds ever flown well or has it just started ?
Guest strapper Posted July 29, 2009 Report Posted July 29, 2009 sometimes the heavy breathing could be down to... feed mixture too high in protein.

Guest Posted July 29, 2009 Report Posted July 29, 2009 sometimes the heavy breathing could be down to... feed mixture too high in protein.Paul ,no heavy breathers here (except me) ,currently bieng fed on gerry + . thanks again . andy.
DAVIDL Posted July 29, 2009 Report Posted July 29, 2009 didnt know you were training them, my own view is that if they are getting training they wont fly as long at home.....
Guest Posted July 29, 2009 Report Posted July 29, 2009 didnt know you were training them, my own view is that if they are getting training they wont fly as long at home.....yes i understand that David , have experienced that before ,and again with the above info taken into account, mature ybs looking to pair ,well trained and treated , but they should still do a 20 minute spin ... not 5 minutes as i am having them do now?? andy.
DAVIDL Posted July 29, 2009 Report Posted July 29, 2009 yes you are probably right andy, they still should do more than 5 mins......but if i remember correctly mine did very similar last year and by the time i had cleaned out they had already landed, i put it down to either they were pairing up, moulting or at the time i had changed corn......
blackdog Posted July 29, 2009 Report Posted July 29, 2009 andy, did you follow up with something for fungal & yeast infection after treating for canker ext as i had the same problem so treated with nystatin for 3 days then saw an improvement.

Guest Posted July 29, 2009 Report Posted July 29, 2009 andy, did you follow up with something for fungal & yeast infection after treating for canker ext as i had the same problem so treated with nystatin for 3 days then saw an improvement. no i didnt treat with any-thing for a fungal or yeast infection ? multivits only after each treatment , also have organic cider vinegar ,and garlic in the water once a week (not the same day). what do you think ?? andy.
blackdog Posted July 29, 2009 Report Posted July 29, 2009 i would give it a go mate, wont do any harm but thats me. better safe than sorry.
sammy Posted July 29, 2009 Report Posted July 29, 2009 no i didnt treat with any-thing for a fungal or yeast infection ? multivits only after each treatment , also have organic cider vinegar ,and garlic in the water once a week (not the same day). what do you think ?? andy. andy save yourself a lot of bother and just get your pigeons tested they are racing now and treatting them for anything might make them a lot worse
Guest Posted July 29, 2009 Report Posted July 29, 2009 thanks for the replies ,awaiting answers on a couple of pms .along with them will decide what to do . if anybody wants further info (in case ive missed any?) or can tell me exactly whats up, please reply ,failing that ,will be waiting on visit of a consultant on monday . thanks to all . andy.
Tony C Posted July 29, 2009 Report Posted July 29, 2009 How are they coming from training (timewise), slower than previous years or about the same.
jimmy white Posted July 29, 2009 Report Posted July 29, 2009 How are they coming from training (timewise), slower than previous years or about the same. i would also ask this question,, plus , how often are they trained?, and how far,?,,,, first question for ailment reasons second,, if yb,s are trained every day, at a fair distance, they will not fly well at home thirdly, when the yb,s become sexually mature , and if left together, sometimes more interested in mating etc,, hope you find the reason andy and manage to get it rectified
rembrant2coo Posted July 29, 2009 Report Posted July 29, 2009 well in my opinion to me gerry plus is not enough , they are still growing and i think you will have to rectify that gerryplus is a carbohydrate mixture ,and your forgetting about there protein levels which is needed for growth and for there maturity , after all there only babies and just giving them g/plus to me is not enough sorry
