Against roundabout.

Most that I know that race the roundabout system seem to get their cocks coming one year another year their hens but very rarely they get them both to hit form in the same year.

For roundabout.

You get to test your hens.

Against widowhood.

Cocks need the sun on their backs.

For widowhood.

The simplicity of the system, less time consuming.

hi tony, been flying roundabout the last 5 years and 9 times out of 10 its been hens that come, dont know why but cocks dont seem to shine much, maybe just my system, so for next season i will only be flying hens and leave the cocks at home so there always there for the hens return

think widowhood cocks is the easiest system, roundabout is more time consuming for a start......but with roundabout you dont get to waste possibly good hens by not racing them.  :)

roundabout for me train the cocks and work the hens round the loft

my hens in the winter try to drop on the trap where the sputnicks are and the cocks and box's are, my worry is if they do this during the season instead of flying it would be my first year on this system next year

any advice?

I would like to fly widowhood for the adult cocks. Widowhood for the adult hens. Natural for the yearlings, both sexes. My problem is that I have to go to the house sometimes. And although I would like to stay at home all day, I have to work. So I will stick to my widowhood cocks. Besides, there is only one 1st prize to be won in the races I enter.

I have thought about it a couple of times but I have not done anything seriously about it. It took me a lot of effort and a lot of mistakes to learn to fly widowhood properly. And this year I decided to experiment with the system. The result was that I came unstuck, big time. It then took a couple of weeks to get them back onto my system before they started to fly properly again. That meant that I had wasted half the season on my flight of fancy. Stupid or what?

Some have said that I waste my hens. Not true. The hens are sent every week as youngsters and because I have plenty at the end of each year, I only keep the best. Year by year the hen team is getting better. Besides that, I have learned that good widowhood hens are vital to get the cocks to really try. I would not risk loosing the best hens because it would cost dearly in the lost form of the cocks.

Another benefit I have, is the fact that I have reached the stage where all the youngsters are out of winning parents. The cocks have to win at least four times to qualify to breed and the hens  have to have done something to be allowed to rear youngsters. My birds are certainly not World Beaters but they are very reliable and are getting better as time goes by. And it is worth a lot to me, the fact that I know them so well.

So I have decided to stay with pure widowhood, for the forseeable future. No more messing about for me, I will trust my lads to do the job as they can and will do.

Have read this very interesting thread, where members are putting forward their opinions.....but not much talked about the distances to be flown.  Not wishing to hi-jack this thread, but would the widowhood & roundabout systems still be good for distance pigeons, that may face a holdover ?
