Guest Posted January 28, 2006 Report Posted January 28, 2006 Nystatin is an antifungal medicine. It kills fungi and yeasts by interfering with their cell membranes. Nystatin works by binding to a substance called ergosterol, which is a component of fungal cell membranes. Binding to ergosterol disrupts the cell membrane and causes holes to appear. The cell membranes of fungi are vital for their survival. They keep unwanted substances from entering the cells and stop the contents of the cells from leaking out. As nystatin causes holes to appear in the cell membranes, essential constituents of the fungal cells can leak out. This kills the fungi. Nystatin suspension is used to treat infections of the mouth, throat and intestines with Candida species of fungi, in particular Candida albicans. These fungi are naturally present in the mouth and gut, but can sometimes increase in numbers if the conditions in these areas change, and this can cause infection. Infection with Candida albicans is known as thrush. The medicine is not absorbed into the bloodstream, which allows the nystatin to act directly in the area of infection 0.5ml individual treatment down the throat for a few days and no water for an hour after or anything up to 10ml per litre for flock treatment depending upon severity or vets advice.
Guest Silverwings Posted January 28, 2006 Report Posted January 28, 2006 speight is bang on with this ! once treated a team of young birds with Y.B.S with Nystatin Vet at the time said they had a form of crop ulcer ? and the nystatin lined the crop walls wich enabled them to hold down their food ? within four days the whole team of youngsters were back to normal , on holls in spain i beleive this stuff costs about 3 quid from the chemists over here its on prescription .
Guest Posted January 29, 2006 Report Posted January 29, 2006 Extract from article I posted on 'Garlic Raw': Effective Antifungal Fungi demonstrated to be susceptible to garlic in lab tests include the genera Microsporum, Epidermophyton, Trichophyton, Rhodotorula, Torulopsis, Trichosporon, Cryptococcus neoformans, and Candida, including Candida albicans. It is reported that garlic is more effective against pathogenic yeasts than nystatin, especially Candida albicans (1) (5) (9) (11). I think at 20p a bulb, it offers the fancier and his pigeons many things, including value for money.
Guest Posted January 30, 2006 Report Posted January 30, 2006 I was told to get the Nystatin when in spain, so have got 6 bottles of the stuff, not quite sure when to use it, so its just sat on the shelf!!! But the lad who told me about it, swares by it.

Guest Posted January 30, 2006 Report Posted January 30, 2006 craig why did you copy and paste all these topics from the up north combine web site????
Blue Chequer Posted February 7, 2006 Report Posted February 7, 2006 Once again Mr Vasey, if Speight wishes to copy something from your site I don't see how you can stop him. Maybe if you were Mr Moderator on this site you would be able to do something about it but as it is, I would suggest you just concentrate on looking after the so called UNC site. Blue Chequer.

Guest Posted April 23, 2007 Report Posted April 23, 2007 Think maybe a mix-up here, Colombovac duo is PMV & Pox, [viruses] not PMV & Paratyphoid (virus + bacteria). Neither Pigeon Pharmacy nor Boddy & Ridewood stock Colombovac Paratyphus.
