nimrod_ Posted March 16, 2009 Author Report Posted March 16, 2009 Can I ask, what makes you think it's been banned?.Done my old birds with it and will be doing young birds later on.Lindsay I was told by our club secretary that i could not use it, the bottle i have is still sealed so it should be ok for doing my old birds.
Guest Posted March 16, 2009 Report Posted March 16, 2009 it will be fine to use as long as you kept it in the fridge
REDCHEQHEN Posted March 16, 2009 Report Posted March 16, 2009 CAN IT STILL BE USED IF THE SEAL HAS BEEN BROKEN AS YOU HAVE THEREFORE PUT AIR IN TO IT ? I am sure it cannot be used - as once seal has been broken it has to be used within 24 hours - or the same day only if not refrigerated
pjc Posted March 16, 2009 Report Posted March 16, 2009 I seem to recall that there was a batch being sold cheap last year that had a problem, I'm sure the RPRA will still have the batch number if you ask them.
Guest IB Posted March 16, 2009 Report Posted March 16, 2009 I seem to recall that there was a batch being sold cheap last year that had a problem, I'm sure the RPRA will still have the batch number if you ask them. My recollection from a BHW article is that there was counterfeit vaccine doing the rounds last year. The current non availability of Colombovac has nothing to do with that, or defective batches, they have relocated to new production facilities and had problems obtaining a production license. If your vaccine is legit, refrigerated and still in date, you can use it.
Tony C Posted March 16, 2009 Report Posted March 16, 2009 What company would relocate then put in for a license :-/ surely this sort of thing would have been sorted first. A little bit more than meets the eye me thinks.
Novice Posted March 16, 2009 Report Posted March 16, 2009 I am sure it cannot be used - as once seal has been broken it has to be used within 24 hours - or the same day only if not refrigerated I agree totally with this post. Using vaccine after the seal has been broken is probably one of the main reasons why pigeons which are vaccinated with vaccine which has been stored in this manner continue to catch the disease. It is factory sealed with a septum cap for good reason.

A little bit more than meets the eye me thinks. Can only repeat what I was told and posted previously, Tony. Here's the email from late 2008:- Answers to your questions Regards Ian Church Manager Poultry Vaccine Division FDAH Hi, We were having a discussion on vaccination in general, the spark for that was Colombovacs non-availability in the UK until 2009. (1) As this is the second time in recent years we wondered what the reason was for this? Due to a change in manufacturing site which requires a new product licence (2) It's time for the annual flu jab, which I understand is different every year to take account of the current strains in the environment. Does this apply too to PMV-1? Unlike flu PMV 1 strain has remained the same for many years (3) We are required by law to do our racing pigeons annually. But have you any research on how long Colombovac gives effective immunity for? Colombovac immunity lasts for one year only which is why they need to be revaccinated annually (4) Is there any plan to produce a once-in-a-lifetime PMV-1 vaccination? No this is not possible
