Good food, clean water, a dry loft with good airflow, Should be all that is required. Treating blind, can have adverse effects on your birds, and damage their natural immune system

Both my race team and stock birds look the best the have looked for sometime, they have had cider vinegar 2/3 times a week or ropidair ,now and then flowers of sulphur on their feed other than that tap water.I can't see any reason to treat them their droppings are good etc. They will get treated for canker when sitting eggs.

i would treat for paratyhoid.

have droppings checked and treat accordinly.

illnesses can appear this time of year and dont listen to myths that they dont.

one thing i would suggest...get all the usual medications in now before the season gets underway...3-4 days of guessing whats wrong then sending for the meds could mean the birds have succumb to the illness and died.

natural products can help deter illneses starting but they wont cure them.

stock birds need treating as well as race.

a pigeon is a pigeon wether he,s an athlete or just a run of the mill pigeon...deseases kill all!

a pigeons worst enemy is man!...we all think we know all about them but one little thing happens and it shows how little we do know about them.

my stock birds were given baytril for ten days before being put together, they never looked as if they ailed from anything, great droppings looked great but i just wanted to make sure, all 7 pair were sitting eggs at 11 days, prevention is better than cure j m o

do you not have a spare tyre in the boot just in case you get a flat? :)

i think there is need for prevention in some cases but treating blind for everything is a no no.

I think your analogy is a whole lot off track...nothing to do with medication !!!!

i wait to hear  your advice and wisdom?

if prevention is not advisable ...then why do the biggest scientists in the world advise us to have preventative swine flu AND normal flu shots!

why do they also advice women to have the cervical cancer jab?

also have the tb jab?

dogs have regular injections...preventative.

preventative jabs before we go abroad!

there are many reasons why we give to prevent...some not so popular.

do not treat your birds for anything they have not got. Some use things like Baytril but it is definately wrong to do that. As Len said have the birds checked and treat for what they have and leave it at that. Most of the medications have side effects and will drag your birds down. And never, never underdose for anything because you will build up the immunity of the bad bugs and they will be resistant to medications when they are needed some time in the future.  The one really important thing you do need to do, is make sure they get minerals fresh every day. Don't do as some do, leave the grit and minerals in the loft to gather dirt and dust. Change it every day. Animals and birds can not utilise the vitamines in their diet unless they have the correct minerals in their system.

I think you may find that winning pigeon races can be surprisingly easy when the birds are fit and well. But equally, you will find that winning pigeon races with overmedicated unfit birds is impossible. Health wise you must aim to have the birds deep down fit, not propped up with medication. It simply does not work.
