FoxesFan4Ever Posted March 6, 2010 Report Posted March 6, 2010 Hi all, OK, so I got in from work last night and checked on the birds. Almost all are perching again now although 2 or 3 still look dodgy. One was in the corner and he was sort of resting on his head with his bum in the air. Picked him up and he wasnt the one that I have been expecting to lose but this morning he was stone dead. So question 1, is the way he was sleeping indicative of anything new and question 2 is I really want to hammer the loft with Jeyes but as of yet I have been reluctant to let them out due to them drinking elsewhere and not getting the meds in the water. Is there anything I can use to disinfect whilst they are still in the loft that wont harm them? I have Milton's here or I can easily go and pick up anything else that is recommended to me. Thanks all
REDCHEQHEN Posted March 6, 2010 Report Posted March 6, 2010 Open the bird up yourself (post mortem) and see if there is anything untoward (still got worms - ulcerated colon - etc etc)
pjc Posted March 6, 2010 Report Posted March 6, 2010 basket the birds and get to work with a blow torch then spray the loft with virkon-s.
mark croker Posted March 6, 2010 Report Posted March 6, 2010 basket the birds and get to work with a blow torch then spray the loft with virkon-s. I had problems last year, it may have been circo, i had loads of differant problems, canker, cocci, pmv, Every day i done this twice and only lost one pigeon, it happened o have won a first but i did not have to get rid of anymore, also i had to treat for every secondary infection that they got Any pigeon that goes ill you have to cull it for the sake of the team, thats what i did and i hope it helps, good luck
pjc Posted March 6, 2010 Report Posted March 6, 2010 I agree with Mark, now you have administered the prescribed medication any more you find on the floor or not looking well should be disposed of imediatly.
Guest IB Posted March 6, 2010 Report Posted March 6, 2010 Think your bird was probably dying / dead when you saw it last night. I've never used Jeyes Fluid so don't know what manufacturers instructions say, but I would have thought lightly hand-spraying all surfaces the birds touch, after your normal cleaning, would be within its safe use range. If its a pump spray, can you not put the birds outside into two baskets, one for 'poorly birds' , while you blast the loft? Have used Virkon S and Vanodine V 18 and no hesitation in spraying with these when birds are in loft. Have scrubbed floor with domestos while birds have been in loft, as a daft teenager like, fumes nearly done my chest in, domestos and milton are similar, they are both sodium hypochlorite, a type of chlorine bleach, though my choice would be domestos.
Daisymay Posted March 6, 2010 Report Posted March 6, 2010 Jeyes fluid DEADLY, do not use, go with pjc's suggestion.
Guest grizzler Posted March 6, 2010 Report Posted March 6, 2010 used jeys fluid for over twenty years, and never had any prolems with it
daz170475 Posted March 6, 2010 Report Posted March 6, 2010 Jeyes Fluid is perfect for the job. I would recommend it to anyone :) :)
Daisymay Posted March 6, 2010 Report Posted March 6, 2010 used jeys fluid for over twenty years, and never had any prolems with it You've been lucky
Guest Freebird Posted March 6, 2010 Report Posted March 6, 2010 Never had a problem with jeys fluid. Dilute 10ml in 1 Ltr.
Guest IB Posted March 6, 2010 Report Posted March 6, 2010 Jeyes Fluid is a DEFRA-approved disnifectant for use in various avian diseases. As I said before, I have never used it, but at least one club in our Fed uses it to disinfect race baskets after the race, and at least one member on here has his deep litter shavings 'dunked' in it. As always, my advice would be to use it as per manufacturer's instructions.
Tony C Posted March 6, 2010 Report Posted March 6, 2010 I would go for Virkon-S simply because I can see the lofts drying out quicker using this.
Roland Posted March 6, 2010 Report Posted March 6, 2010 Gordon Chalmbers wrote me that Parazone - what you dye hair with... for those that have any left lo, 3% in water keeps the loft tip top.

I think you would probably need to be nuts to dye your hair with this stuff seeing as it is a toilet cleaner lol. You sure he didnt mean peroxide?

BLACK W F Posted March 8, 2010 Report Posted March 8, 2010 try useing the blow torch after cleaning out and if you can get some sheep dip mix it 1 to a 100 and spry the loft out best of luck
