I think your wife is right, pigeons are associated with the working class, i.e miners etc. but as we know there are all sorts into pigeons , me, I'm a retired sheep farmer but I have a non farming background

Quick check of the lofts first thing this morning as usual, 3 day old chick lying dead outside of bowl, picked it up, stone cold, was going to put it in the bucket but as I was coming back in an hour to feed and scrape out I put it back under the hen, when I got to the box when scraping out I lifted the hen and there were two chicks sitting there as happy as Larry, no idea which was the dead one , Just goes to show,don't give up lightly, could be a future Top Gun

I suppose like most things in life new born chicks are good survivors if given a chance, I had a dented egg recently with a chick doing it's best to hatch so I helped it out, the nest mate was out the day before, amazing the growth in a youngster in just one day, the difference was unbelievable, I gave the chick a syringe of milk, 4 parts evaporated milk to 1 of water and the same the next day, I put the ring on the titch 7 days after ringing the first one, The big one is well feathered now and titch is just starting to feather but always has a full crop and I know in a couple of weeks they will be the same size, never give up on a tryer

My brother has bred and shown Budgies for 50yrs. and I'm thinking why do I stay with the pigeons when his hobby seems so easy, no outside influences, Bop, wires weather etc.What is it that keeps us going ?
