  1. Many London feds are to due race out of Newark this weekend. We're concerned that due to the recent flooding the site may be unfit or even under water. If anyone that lives local to the site could give us any info it would be appreciated. cheers

    Do pigeons need grit?

Came across this at http://people.eku.edu/ritchisong/RITCHISO//birddigestion.html The avian stomach is divided into 2 parts: Proventriculus - also called the glandular stomach; receives food from the esophagus & secretes mucus, HCl, and pepsinogen. Pepsinogen is converted into pepsin (a proteolytic, or protein-digesting, enzyme) by the HCl. Ventriculus (or gizzard): the avian equivalent of teeth very muscular (but less so in birds that eat meat, insects, nectar, and other 'soft' foods) used primarily to grind & break-up food (such as seeds) may, in seed-eating birds, contain grit (small stones ingested by the birds to help grind the food) lined with a tough, abrasive keratin-like layer of koilin, known as the cutica gastrica. Grinding action may, particularly in seed-eating birds, be assisted by grit and stones deliberately ingested.

    soya beans

This is taken from Grains, Fuel and Pigeon Racing By Gordon Chalmers, DVM Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada Malt sprouts, and by extension, other sprouted grains, are high in protein and some vitamins at the time of sprouting, and once they get used to them, birds relish them and will eat them avidly. Hulled oats are the same as oat groats. As long as they are cooked first, soybeans can be fed to pigeons as well as to other classes of livestock. Don't feed raw soybeans to any livestock, including pigeons, because of the anti-nutritive substances they contain. Cooking destroys these substances and renders these beans suitable for feeding. Whey powder is listed for informational purposes, because it is high in lactose, a sugar that is a source of nutrient for "friendly" bacteria that are added to drinking water or feed, in plain yogurt or commercially available probiotics. These bacteria use the lactose as a source of nutrient, a by-product of which is lactic acid. In turn, the lactic acid helps to acidify intestinal contents and to create a hostile environment for unfriendly bacteria such as paratyphoid organisms, or disease- producing stains of E.coli, among others
