water from cooked vegetables
holmsidelofts replied to ally mac's topic in Natural Remedies & Supplements
yeah thats what we used to do with elderberries, you can buy the ice cube bags that make about 10-15 ice cubes per back, fill then up with elderberry juice, freeze them the break them off when needed and put them in the water. -
Thats disgusting, what chance of the bird got all they needs is to be blown into the water and they dead. that shouldnt be allowed in my opinion. we moan about pigeon welfare then you have that.

I dont think he'll find one in there, lol ;D ;D ;D

loss of leg use when laying ?????
holmsidelofts replied to oldguy's topic in Help - What's wrong with my bird?
Same here for me, since i started feeding grit and minerals plus they get osteaocare calcium supplement i have had no issues with hens going off the legs or egg binding and as owen said the quality of the eggs produced by the hens are fantastically smooth and i rarely have issues. People really do underestimate the importance of grit, minerals and calcium supplements, i was one of these 5 years ago but they are now a daily part of my birds life and i wouldnt be without them. -
The problem is cost. Ideally you want your own server not a shared one, that way you dont get the issues, but it comes down to cost, you are talking about anything upto and above £100 a month for rental of your own server. sites like this couldnt do that without charging membership and thats the great thing about sites like this they cost members nothing unless they would like to contribute. Problems happen but im grateful to the owners of the site for giving us a community that gives us all a place to hang out and talk pigeons. server downtime is a pain but it sometimes happens. to be honest we should all contribute to the up keep of the site by donating to the site that way we probably could change servers but until then i think we need to be grateful for what we have at the moment
-
Quite strange that though i have my own websites and rent server space and have never had an issue with server down time, Its not as if there are thousands on at one time. what you probably find is that the server we are sharing with other sites are on a very busy server with sites that are getting huge hits and we suffer from it, It aint to do with the amount of members on this site thats the issue.

Sparrowhawks are fairly predicable birds and tend to attack from the same direction, and its normally done with surprise. We had problems with them but theres an easy answer, put up strawberry wire across the area that they attack from, its difficult for them to see and after a while you dont have the issue anymore. once the birds see the sparrow hawk and they are in the air they aint much of a problem to a pigeon, its the surprise attack that catches pigeons out. I would like to take this opportunity to apologies to the committee and members of the the Welsh North Road Federation for comments i made back in july last year on this forum, I made comments in anger that reflected badly on the federation, It was not my intention to damage the reputation of the federation that i have been a member of for over 20 years and i apologise for my actions. I look forward to the season ahead with the Federation and would like to thank the federation for there understanding in this matter. I wish members of the federation all the best for the coming season. Jason Edwards. Holmsidelofts.

I agree but you always get one that does and its normally always your best pair for some reason. but i tend not to spend that much time in the stock loft, i feel they are better if you leave them alone. i like to spend the time with the babies, thats where races are won, building up the trust with the babies when they are young.

Hi all. Ive been there, tried everything from straw, easibed, woodshavings, grid floors, but nothings beats some hard work and a scraper. I do use the versa laga loft dressing in my trays in the stock loft as i dont like spending to much time in there when they are siting as i hate birds coming off there nests, but as soon as the eggs hatch it will be back to the scraper. jas.

loss of leg use when laying ?????
holmsidelofts replied to oldguy's topic in Help - What's wrong with my bird?
Totally agree with owen, ive seen many times before when there is a calcium/magnesium deficiency, remember also that the body needs vitamin D otherwise the body cannot absorb calcium correctly. Without enough vitamin D, one can’t form enough of the hormone calcitriol (known as the “active vitamin Dâ€). This in turn leads to insufficient calcium absorption from the diet. In this situation, the body must take calcium from its stores in the skeleton, which weakens existing bone and prevents the formation of strong, new bone. when hens lay they use a huge amount of calcium to produce there egg shell, thats why its important to supply it to them before for about a month. then continue throughout rearing. I use osteocare calcium liquid from any good health shop. I have been using it for years and have never seen a reoccurrence of hens leg going on them. Got the tip from john halstead. -
Hi bad trapper. For me there is no such thing as an all round, Sprint birds wont win at 500 miles whilst still winning at sprint and distance birds wont compete competitively at short distance racing. If you look at all the big names they have birds specifically for each distance, Jos thone for instance doesnt win at all distances with the same blood, horses for courses, Get a good sprint family for the races up to 200 miles and a good middle/long distance family for the rest. that way you can compete competitively at all distances. dave allen tonic recipe
holmsidelofts replied to holmsidelofts's topic in Natural Remedies & Supplements
Just one word of warning guys it bloody stinks when making it and the mrs is happy about the birds love it. i us it all year round. jas -
Hi all. As promised the recipe i use for making the dave allen tonic. This is one of the best tonics you can give the birds. Its content helps keep the acidity in the gut high which helps to inhibit bad bacteria growth in the gut and it keeps the birds in tiptop condition. I have used this tonic for many years and wouldnt be without it. This particular recipe came from a member of pigeon chat who post it a few years back. DAVE ALLEN TONIC (with alteration) Initially the mixture was made by boiling the garlic with the lemon but I changed this after consultation with Dr Chalmers as I believed that boiling the garlic would damage the goodness of the garlic. I have used it for years. INGREDIANTS 4 bulbs of garlic (bulbs consisting of about 10 cloves) peel and crushed 4 lemons cut each into 4 3 desert spoons of Columbine tea 50ml aqueous iodine (Lugols available from chemist) 1/2 kilo brown sugar METHOD Boil 2 ltr water add lemons and simmer for 30 minutes Add the Columbine tea and simmer for 10 minutes Add the iodine and simmer for 10 minutes Add sugar and simmer for 10 minutes Turn off heat, cover and leave for 48 hours. Remove lemon Add garlic and stir well Bottle and refrigerate for 7 days to let the garlic infuse with the mix Shake well before use. USEAGE 30ml to 5 ltr drinking water (100 birds) for 7 days straight then twice a week jas.

To me i dont see the point of stopping someone because of the competition, i fly to beat the best and thats the challenge, I dont just want to be a winner in club racing but at fed and national level where i compete against everyone anyway, to me bring on the competition but i know some clubs are like this. Its more likely they would not except if people didnt like the person in question or as others have said they are seen as trouble makers. Unfortunately it is down to a members vote and if enough people vote against that person thats the outcome unfortunately, but i would certainly be asking the question why?
-
I depends on if they are breeders or racers. if they are breeders then i have no issues but i wouldnt let a widowhood cock nest on the floor, his space is his box, and he has to fight for that box, thats what hes returning home for, by rearing in that box it cements that bond, allowing them to nest elsewhere is a no no for me. Jas.
-
yeah you are right it does stink but its really good for the birds, i wouldnt be without it. I will post up the recipe later for everyone if you like. Jas.

I wouldnt use metal corrugated sheets on there own as they condensate, i have them on my roof but have a wooden plywood roof underneath them this stops the condensation happening.

Hi dave. I have done both, mixed my own and used commercial mixtures, im currently using gem breeding adding to it gem g10 pellets, for the racers at the moment they are getting 50% breeding 50% barley as i havent paired them up yet. they all get fresh grit / minerals every day, i use gem matrix. In the water they get a good multi vit once a week and i use the dave allen tonic throughout the racing season. When youngsters hatch they get calf colostrum on the corn a couple of times a week. racers get brewers yeast and fresh lemon on the corn, plus once a week on there return they get calf colostrum on the corn whilst racing. There are tested and treated where necessary and are vaccinated for PMV and salmonella every year. Its really up to you mate really. As long as they are kept healthy, fed a good mix and managed well they will fly well. Everyone has there own way of doing things theres no right or wrong, you have to find out what works for you, All situations are different. Jas.

Thats not a problem owen. I just sent you a pm with the info you wanted mate. Jas.
