ok guys here is what ive discoverd i cant take all the credit for this as michael massarella planted the seed so to speak a while back i was talking to michael about old stock birds and fertility and we both agreed that with old hens when they stop laying its simply because they only have so many eggs in there ovaries and when there gone there gone but it was his theory on old cocks that set me thinking i told him i thought part of the problem with old cocks is when they are in a stock loft with other cocks they get bullied so i built single compartments and for the next few years it solved the problem all the old cocks eggs were full but now these cocks are 14 15 16 and now 18 year olds and were starting to miss a few and i thought this was because they were becoming infertile to which michael said he did not think old cocks ever became infertile i was very surprised to hear him say this and said so why do we get empty eggs with old cocks then michael said in his opinion its because the old cocks dont tread the hens enough now as most of you guys know i pair the stock birds early the old timers in the single compartments the 18 16 and 14 year olds were all empty f k i thought there done then i thought about what michael said so i split them for two days and then put them them back togethere this time i watched as i have cctv at my loft which i pointed at the stock loft close up view so i could see inside and record on my old vhs recorder what i saw was the first two days the old cocks were treading the hens every few hours but by the third and forth days the old cocks were happy just to sit in the bowl cooing to the hen who come to him and preen his head and such but they did not tread the hens michael was right after they are first paired the old guys lose interest in treading and are happy with a cuddle the sex drive is just not as strong ok i thought problem sussed but how do i fix it theres so much we dont know about our birds for instance when a hen preens a cock is she saying i need you to mate with me again is she trying to stimulate the old guy to tread her knowing if he does not her eggs will not be fertile or is she just showing affection who knows yet i thought when i had these old guys on a bull system all the eggs were full why was that then the penny droped because they only saw the hen once a day by taking the cocks away after treading they were stimulating thereself as they were missing not having a hen with them and were left alone in there own compartment to think about it so here is how i solved the problem of how to keep an old cock stimulated now now this is a family show keep it clean lol i did not want to keep taking the old cocks out there compartment at there age so after the 3rd day i took there hens out and put them in a basket every night as soon as i put them back in the morning the old guys tread them this i did every day till the first egg was layed taking the hens away after a few hours togethere then putting them back in the morning or next day was enough to make the old cocks glad to see them and they would tread them as soon as the hen was put back the result every one of there eggs are full anothere lesson learned just like us old guys absence makes the heart grow fonder and the brain stimulated lol

think if you sort the protein the rest takes care of its self more or less buster add what you fancy but like i say when i saw what some guys were feeding and winning on i now feed by results i get when feeding certain grains and so far ive found adding barley to any mix works fine for me i think the amount you feed no matter what it is is more inportant imo thanks i think lol

years ago when i was into all this percentage rubbish the aim was to have your protein content no higher than 15 or 16 percent max for racing 19 to 20 percent for rearing yb the rest made up of carbohydrates which i did till i found out guys were knocking the s t out me feeding 100per beans or big floury dog tooth maize and if i remember correctly tic beans are 26 per protien maple peas 24 percent go figure to me feeding barley is like kids with potatoes they wont eat them if they know the ice cream is coming but give them nothing for a day and then give them potatoes and theyll eat the lot any bird that does not eat barley is being over fed and not hungry imo but every one to there own because someone sits in a lab and works out what percentages of what is in a type of grain does not make them an expert on rearing and winning with livestock a good stockman can see what is working for his birds and the type of races he wants to win if it was as simple as percentage of grain we would all just buy the ready made up balanced diet which just happens to be the most expensive and we would all win

correct and its 90 percent barley with a handful of seed through it but call it depuritive and you can get double the price for it another rip off

think one of the things ive learned over the years is up to 300 miles good healthy fit pigeons will win on any clean dry grain or feed ive known guys to fly great on 100 percent barley tic beans maze rice wheat peas even bread the great eddie newcombe fed chocolate covered pea nuts which started the peanut fad one of the best years i had myself i was feeding 50 percent wheat 50 percent chicken pellets why because i got a load of it for nothing we only think we know what a pigeon needs the truth is much more simple imo
