  1. pigeons do seem to eat more in the cold, but you dont want them fat, or you will have difficulty in getting hens to lay, so once the moult is finished, feed them on a lighter diet
  2. ive used it , with no problems whatsoever, has any one else,? and if so. have you encountered any problems
  3. good old doogal, glad somebody agreed with me, and my OLD pal bruno off course ;D ;D im sure bruno could explain the virtues of this, better than me.,[if he does ill take the OLD back :) ]
  4. i have noticed with differant breeding they have differant temprements, but would prefer a tame quiet bird for the longer races
  5. my old dad used to use ebsom salts,,, he was a good runner ;D ;D ;D but in this day and age it is outdated, exellent post by sbelbin [ certainly not for birds returning from races]
  6. i dont think you can ventilate too much, i think more to the point ,as the birds being bone dry in their boxes or perches, at roosting times
  7. thanks meally bar , im afraid im a wee bit old fashioned, but still trying [ probably very trying :) ]
  8. i understand what your saying bruno, and i also like to know the why,s hows and whats about illneses, but have found out by experience, with a yb not having a good[ perfect]start in life, they will never make it.these weaklings are open to all sorts of secondry third etc etc infections, you would never find out what was wrong with it, one of the many infections would kill it, so really your just playing with fire, trying to " bring it on" shadow is blunt with his answer, but perfectly honest,
  9. i got a cheapy from argos £57, no nothing about pixels [ or cameras , but i notice printed on mine 4.0 mega pixels, anyone know what that means? :-/ :-/ :-/ ;D
  10. hi sbelbin, i think your idea of a small aviary is great, and as you say your working and cant get the birds out as much as you would like, this would be ideal for them to get fresh air and a bath etc, even getting the sun,[if thats possible ]the hen i sent you was kept in an open 8 by 6 aviary with a wooden back on and a perspex roof, box perches at the back, a two foot board at the side ,from top to bottom, where the perches are, the birds are bone dry on their perches, yet open to all the elements, and you would have seen the condition of the hen , good luck with your van sbelwhits. ;D ;D ;D
  11. SO AM I LIVERPOOL BOY, ;D ;D ;D i was thinking more of a poll to decide the young fancier of the year , with all things considered, age, amount of birds, how long theve had them, size of loft, anything at all that might sway the forum, not neccessary the best results, i would be willing to go half with fifer, buying a trophy, and a forum certificate to all that entered , would cost very little , but would mean a lot to the young fancier
  12. i have a strong feeling when the rspb are backed in to a corner, they are experts at wriggling there way out WHICH SHOULDNT BE
  13. i think you could be right james, sometimes we olduns, become set in our ways, definately food for thought.
  14. some brilliant photos speight
  15. simple,,,, to make money,,,,if the fanciers could only see that, they would be a lot better off, [all ways] :)
  16. their" voice" does change when its at the stage where its in between a coo, and a squeak, but thats for a very short time ,, that, to me, does not sound like that, it sounds more like the bird is" ill " and will never make a decent pigeon, and should not be with the rest of the birds, sorry
  17. never wore a mask in over 50 years [ maybe i should :) ] but ive never been effected by the birds, unfortunately some fanciers are
  18. youve certainly did some brilliant work, bruno , and at the moment , , im taking it all in. i have e mailed defra , no response so far to the following e mail,,,, dear sir, after watching the most interesting programme on bbc 2 on wed, about eagle owls. i am confused at the remark made by mr ewan,, rspb. concerning these birds being not wanted here, as they dont belong here. yet in the 2004 wildlife and countryside act, section 27,it states that if a bird is born in the wild here, it certainly belongs here. i wonder if you would be kind enough, to enlighten me on this subject thanking you , yours faithfully james white
  19. looks like we aint getting much luck westy, thanks for your answer ,and theres me thinking we were all out to help and encourage the younger fliers????
  20. i hear what your saying westbury and agree fully with you, but i was meaning a proper survey, electronic chips etc, just to determine the flight path , the losses, the way the winners came , the weather , the distance, where the birds come down , overnight,HOW MANY CASUALTIES , in certain 2 day distance races do the birds that come down first, win, or the birds that have flown out the full 16 hours etc etc etc , if universities could do a proper survey, with fanciers involvedI i think it would be most interesting.... strange and fastenating things, pigeons i remember the late george bain had a bird reported 5mies from his loft in a 550 mile race, he would have been in the first dozen in the national, but the bird was flown out and would not leave that loft, not even the next day, when he went to collect it, the race was over, at least he was honest,,.then the big question is would we want to know , or would we prefer not to know, i for one would like to know
  21. i allways remember pigeons in our back garden ,but i ,and my brother first raced them in 1955 along with my father. my brother was 3 years older than me, and i was made to wear his hand me down clothes,,,,,the trousers were that big for me, i had to open the fly to blow my nose,, ;D ;D ;D p.s. my mother used to get all our clothes out the army an navy stores,,,, we looked rediculous going to school like two wee japanese admirals ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
  22. agree with above posts for old birds, but would prefer to do ybs at 4 weeks old,. just a point of interest,,,, what constitutes a vaccinated bird?? if i gave an ob just 1ml ",would that be vaccinated"
  23. i liked to give them peanuts preparing them for distance races, whilst moulting or whilst feeding young, other wise i would go easy on them, and just use a few broken down as a tit bit,as they are very fattening,,,,,,but they love them,
  24. :) the best sprint birds are bred down from a line of the best sprint winners . van winneranybreeds :) mated up with van managements :)
  25. the best long distant strain, is the birds bred through long distance winners, no matter what their so called breed is,,, and management. a van longdistantbreeding,, paired up with a van management. :)
