silverdale had me thinking way back, i got a yb in belonging to blackpool, on the day of our first yb race, i phoned up the owner, who told me to keep it[ i was in edinburgh]i told him i would put in the next race as a trainer, and hopefully hed get the bird back, well the bird was back to me before a lot of my own. so he transferred the bird, and i raced it right through to the yb national[ 280 miles at that time], the bird raced quite well and steady, as a yearling ,he went to 5 yb races, being 3d and 5th, it flew from lancaster on the sat, when it was 3d, went missing from the loft on monday, i thought a cat or hawk or wires, but that evening i got a phone call to say the bird was back in his old loft,in blackpool, just goes to show they never forget, [ the bird was on widowhood]

whilst walking through the nearby country side a few week ago, in that icy spell,i went in to an old farm shed, for a nose around and a cuppa out my flask, this shed was open at both ends, with the freezing wind going right through, yet the pigeons on the rafters in the apex, were in the most perfect condition, which prooves they can stand any amount of cold, in my opinion the worst enemy to pigeons are damp stuffy conditions .

looking back on these very interesting topics, i think that i would tend to agree with brunos first post, that homing instinct be a mixture of senses, and the fitter the bird becomes the more sharper these senses are, but i think its a very difficult and complex topic.

i remember , sometime ago, i moved to kelso from edinburgh[roughly35 miles]the ybs in my old loft were out once, as i had just found out i had got this house, after the ybs were in there new loft about a week , with an aviary. one flew over my head, i picked that bird up from the old loft ,the next day.,,,,strangest things pigeons,, i would never have singled a yb up [8 weeeks old] 35 miles, but there you are. they baffle you every time.

i sincerely hope and pray that rachel recovers

WHY NOT HAVE THEIR DROPPINGS TESTED, ITS A LOT CHEAPER, THEN IF ANYTHING NEEDS TO BE DONE,, IT CAN BE DONE

A FEW FANCIERS HAVE EXPERIENCED" FLYAWAYS" IN YBS. I WONDER IF THIS IS INSTINCT, AS OUR RACING PIGEONS ARE CLOSELY RELATED TO ROCK DOVES, WHICH, ORIGINALY LIVED IN CAVES, ETC, IF THEY KEPT BREEDING THEY WOULD BE STANDING ON TOP OF EACH OTHER, SO I WONDER IF THIS IS INSTINCT TO TRAVE AWAY AND FORM A NEW COLONY ELSE WHERE, AS I HAVE NOTICED FLYAWAYS HAPPEN IN MORE CROWDED LOFTS, JUST A THOUGHT

it would be better if mr meally is a mrs mealy, it would even things out for you snowy, but if it is a cock and hen they will pair up eventualy. but a seprerate wee tip if you get a boisterous cock knocking ten bells out the hen, whilst their locked in the box, is put a half brick in so that the hen can sit on it, as sometimes the hen can get fairly pecked, even scalped in some cases, best of luck anyway

PIGEONS ARE SO STRANGE AT TIMES, IVE OFTEN BRED A REALLY GOOD PIGEON OFF THE MOST UNLIKLIEST PAIR, BUT IF YOU DO GET A PAIR THROWING WINNERS, THEIR WORTH THERE WEIGHT IN GOLD

exract out the cage and aviary a few weeks ago, written by a colin watson a" pigeon fanatic years ago" heading," pigeons and the perigrine myth" perigrines do kill pigeons, thats a fact , but compared to other hazards pigeons face, the risk is miniscule. and like any other preditors, the falcons habitually single out the weak or sick birds, not champion racers.....cage and aviary dec 15 i wonder if colin has witnessed a perigrine dive in to a batch of 40 perfectly fit ybs, and kill one, with the other 39 flying into anything in a mad panick, most of them injuring themselves very badly. and to comment that they wont kill champion racers is absolutely absurd.

i dont think it is scaremongering when it is facts, but it is when its speculation.
