just to keep the topics light, i remember a few years ago, we had two races on the same day, the national, and the fed open, it worked out that the birds could be arriving at the same time, i remember muttering to my mates "this is rediculous, two big races , and their both about due, you watch, some idiot will put the wrong bird in the wrong clock" well some idiot did ,,ME ;D ;D ;D

great job maddy , great to see rachel smiling , she really is the forums wee princess and to you too clockman, i dont think we all quite realise the work and effort you both put in to it, but that smile in the second photo, would reward anyone. brilliant job.well done,

i agree with shadow, but would say that any young lad or lass that has kept pigeons, do tend to go for the other birds, when their about that age. but i beleive the seed is planted, and at sometime of his or her life they will keep pigeons again., but certainly agree with the rest of his post .

i never said it was that easy, but out of a difficult job, ive found it the best way,,,eventually

i would agree with sbelbins post, adding , training all ybs very hard including basket training, to at least 50 miles, then about 3 races, once this is installed in to them, they never forget, and do not have to race as yearlings, maybe a few tosseswith ybs. would do no harm, but if their earmarked for the distance, they musnt be, burnt out, b4 their 2or 3 year old, i beleive this yb training to be of beneficial, to develope their inner organs, heart lungs etc. just my opinion
-
best to best, to suit distance or sprint
-
just musing over a point, instinct being differant than brain, instinct tells the bird to build a nest, take twigs in etc, but it doesnt tell it HOW to get it in, its comical to watch a pigeon ,take a twig,or tobacco stalk, and try and get it through the entry door of the widowhood fronts, ,,,sideways :)
-
i would allways like yearlings to have reared ybs b4 going on widowhood

IM ON THE OUTSIDE, LOOKING IN NOW, [AS IT WERE] AND I CAN HONESTLY SAY, THAT I CAN SEE IT ALL STARING ME IN THE FACE, JEALOUSY, RUMOUR MONGERING ,BITTERNESS,ARGUEMENTS, MOSTLY DONE BY IGNORANCE.IM FORTUNATE TO HAVE, AND KNOW, MANY GENUINE, AND HONEST, AND HELPFULL FANCIERS, I JUST WISH THERE WERE MORE OF THESE,[ FORTUNATELY THERE ARE STILL QUITE A FEW] -

one word ,,,,jealousy, the other members should be trying harder, and not taking the cowards way out,,, thats what competition should be... fifers spot on in his post. this is happening far to often, your every ones pal when your last every week ,but try and win???? -

i personally think ,when the hawk wants his dinner, he wont worry to much about the colour, hell have his dinner.

i would start yb training at about 10 weeks old starting with a couple of miles working up to 50 miles, i would also train differant directions when slighly experienced, single or double up if i had time, train every day if possible, BUT , in this day and age , theres the old hawk problem.??? so it kind of depends on the area your in., but if possible would like my ybs well trained.

;D ;D ;D great topic , bet we can have a few laughs, ;D ;D ;D i can never forget the embarassment, when i was about 15 years old, first time i entered an open show, carefully basketed the birds, carefully penned them at the show AND CARELESSLY FORGOT TO CLOSE THE SHOW PEN. the bird flew about the hall all night, wrecking the place in the process, the caretaker, had to let it out the window in the morning, it was a very high hall , and impossible to catch it. it settled on the rafters, dropped a" bomb" and missed the judge by about a yard,,,,talk about a red face ;D ;D ;D

GOING BACK THESE POSTS, I CANNOT IMAGINE ANY ONE PUTTING REMARKS IN LIKE BENS, IF YOU LOOKED IN TO ANDYS RESULTS, I THINK "MEDIOCRE" WOULD BE AN INSULT. THIS MAN HAS FLOWN THE BEST, IN THE HIGHEST CLASS COMPETITION, AND NOT JUST ONCE OR TWICE, HES WON AT THE" HIGHEST LEVEL" FROM 60 TO 560 MILES,,, REGULARLY. FAIRS FAIR. NO MEAN FEAT.
