  1. i take it your talking about prisoner stock birds, i used to seperate all birds when the racing finished ,, fed them well , till the moult was completely finished [intended race birds out every second day ,,cocks then hens],,,,,,,,,,when the last flight was completely up, , i fed the stock birds , beans and barley , and kept them short [rationed by judgement ,i,e just enough to do them and ,no more ] they are not over keen on beans and barley so, wont over eat too much anyway, i never paired the stock birds till end of jan , [race birds later] i never found any advantage in mating in dec or jan
  2. i also .like many on the forum, learned a lot from him also, theres a lot to be learned by looking through his previous posts , quite a lot of them ,all factual and worth reading , theres no doubt about it bruno put more than most on this forum , and all worth looking through,im sure most members are gratefull of the hard work he put in to this and off course the time and effort put in to this forum , this post is not off topic as if you look back on brunos posts , he mentions pectorals
  3. im just wondering if this bird had training tosses b4 these 2 , and if so was it ok then? i should think if the bird had a fracture on the one side [apart from vet, x ray] i should think the wing would droop,,, or at least after excercise , the wing would droop
  4. this is very true [my mummy told me that ;D ;D ;D] only kidding ,,,,,,, but the post is very true
  5. in my opinion this bird may have possibly have had an injury , as the pectoral muscles are on both sides of the keel bone, both should be balanced and the same , as the pectoral muscle drives the wing , its possible the birds wing has been damaged on the "bad" side, or even damaged the muscle itself .just to use an example [not that im saying its this ] ive handled birds that have" recovered" with salmonella leaving a bad wing [one wing beating faster than the other,or even unable to fly due to a stiff wing , the side of the faulty wing has limited pectoral muscle easily felt on handling the bird, compared to the other side, [off course a bird like this should never be in the loft , but as i say,, just using this as an example ] so in my opinion, in this case , damage to the wing or breast
  6. well done rick,, :)
  7. good luck to billy , hes looking a bit better now, lets hope he puts a bit weight on now , and rallies round,, bet seeing his dog would do him the world of good :)all the best billy, get well soon

  9. for yb,s a stall trap ,, but they have to be well used to it from babies [if a yb gets a fright being grabbed it wont come in the next week ,,,,,,,,,,or sometimes makes a bad trapper for good]

  16. well done red cheq hen ,, the birds are going great guns ;D even better than last week ;D especially in such a big fed carry on the good work
  17. good luck to you paul im sure you will find a big difference in the pain and movement , i, unfortunately have advanced ankylosing spondulitis, [for many years now , i self inject "anti tnf injection" 3 times a week.and strong pain killers ] had an mri scan [one of many :'(] few weeks ago to see if it was poss, to take a disc out ,but on seeing the state of my back etc theve decided its inoperatable ,to dangerous , as most of my back is fused, but they may be able to operate on a nerve wich has pressure on it causing numb foot ,not the best of news to me,,,,,,,,,,but whilst in hospital met many who had discs removed ,, every one of them felt a great benifit just with a bit of time , so best of luck to you paul im quite sure youll benefit from this op.
  18. dont know who dug these pics out, from such a while ago, but have to smile at the pics and the replies ;D ;D ;D
  19. as this is the main muscle as to flying, i beleive in the "condition" of the pectorial muscle , like most muscles, excepting the nostrils ;D, can be conditioned for the" eleventh hour" off course the muscles must be there in the first place ,, but muscles can be[1] slack ,[2] tired , or spot on [,1] many a bird [especially yearlings ] could fly so many hours on the sat ,,or even return on the sun.maybe in bad weather this birds pectorial muscles would be tired for the following sat, it would benefit from resting this muscle, missing a race or two, im sure an experienced flier , like vic would know when this pigeon was ready , to do a build up for a race [2] the slack muscle, is the complete opposite , handling" soft " even fat and stodgey[the only way i can explain ;D] this bird needs tightened up with excercise,[ 3] handling like cork ,,,,,,spot on [maybe even spot on,the keel ,,,,the form spot in short, the birds pectorial muscles can be" managed" to be ready for the race in hand
  20. white pigeon to budgie.........we can mate,,,,,,,,,at least our babies can ask there way home ;D ;D ;D
  21. dont seem to be getting many answers vic, :'( , wonder if most fanciers actually know what the pectoral muscle is ;D ;D ;D, anyway, just a point of interest ,,on a post b4 i said the pectorial muscle was the largest muscle on the pigeon and was corrected [maybe right enough ] that the gizzard was the largest , i had allways though[ im an idiot and admit it ;D] that the gizzard was an organ , but true enough it is a muscle , but dont know if its the biggest , maybe your veiw vic, or anyone for that matter ;D
  22. still fair on the east side ,, but looking south dark clouds ,,rain not too far away :'(
  23. yip agree ,,,,sweety wifes , more interested in others business , than their own birds [funny, you never find the big winners like that ] good luck to the doo and son i think thats the best attitude,, ,,,,,as wilcox say,s,,,,,,,,",pigeon fanciers :'(" the good thing is ,,, the good ones are good and make great life long freinds , which can only be a good thing ,both for the fancy and the fancier
  24. looking at the threads so far,,, it really makes you think , most of the lofts ive visited lately have all been in the same boat? hence the post,,,,,,makes you wonder if yb racing is that important [really just to loose birds ] seems eveyone takes a hammering ,,no matter where,, makes you think what the answer is [the pigeon is not really mature till 2 y,o , but so few?]
  25. you deserve a medal , racing up there ,, best of luck [and hope you win lottery ;D ;D ;D we can go half ;D ;D ;D
