  1. Fits nice to see that book we have a couple of the same book, we have raced to Sam's house since 1980 Sam died in the early 70's and he had very few if any of the Gits left when he died.
  2. Pigeon men are a law unto themselves we moan about the price of corn subs birdage cost and most other things we have to fork out for, then they go out and buy nest felts: whats up with straw and and let them get on with it without any risk of young birds dying.
  3. This was a strain of birds raced in the latter part of the 19th and early 20th centuries, just looked at a 1907 Homing pigeon annual there is an advert of T.H. Burton he is selling birds bred down off Orchardsons old Bonami blood including an own son and daughter of the the famous 28 and 27 Bonami pair.Hope this helps that is how it spelled in this book.
  4. Van Reets they also make a good cross.
  5. Very good, there is another version of this sung by June Tabor if you google June Tabor King of Rome you can listen to it, if you do then listen to another one of hers on there called The Band Played Waltzing Matilda.
  6. What a sad day when a fancier of Peters caliber "on doctors orders" calls it a day, I spoke to Peter the other night he is carrying on as secretary of his club so he can keep involved with pigeons, not many of his sort left, he and his wife are the real genuine article. On behalf of our Bob and me I hope you stay involved as long as you can thank you both for your contribution to this great sport.
  7. we have just had some made the same as geraldy ones for our club, must say ahell of alot better How much and who made them.
  8. Talk to Rod Adams and he will tell you all about the problems with cod liver oil, we used it for years before we had any trouble.
  9. Don't use any cod liver oil,or cod liver oil based products we had a big problem with blood quills and Rod Adams put us straight on the cause.
  10. * Edit post * Report this post * Reply with quote Lol Whittle Postby briansmith on Mon Nov 24, 2008 5:16 pm I received a phone call this morning informing me of the passing of Lol Whittle of North Ashton, any one who knew Lol knew the respect in which he was held within our sport. Lol was a doer he had a go at most if not all jobs in pigeon racing, he was a convoyer, driver, auctioneer, scribe, but in these parts he will be remembered most of all for his prowess as a secretary, my first dealings with him was with the old North Ashton continental 3 bird in the early seventies, he was the secretary until the club disbanded in the late eighties, not wanting to see the north west with no top class 500 mile races he formed the present day North Ashton club in 1991 establishing this as the best 2 bird distance club in England. He took over the secretary job at Wigan 2 bird when the club was on it's uppers retiring from both job's in the last few years leaving both clubs with a very healthy balance sheet and a good member base. Anyone who remembers his writings in the B.H.W, will remember the down to earth easy to read way in which he wrote, this was Lol all over a very down to earth man who got on with the job in hand whilst others watched, as a secretary I have not seen better as racing man he held his own and in the bar he stood his corner. All this from a man who suffered ill health for a great number of years but still made a huge impact on our sport. To Vall and his family our greatest sympathy and condolences. Rest in peace mate. Bob & Brian Smith.
  11. We got our first Van Reets in 1987 from Dave Allen,we then got birds from Merlin Hudson Ian Axe Tony Mardon all before 1990. We still have the same bloodlines to this day, these have won from Saintes 540 miles Niort 500 miles and Nantes 430 pure, crossed they have excelled from 60 miles to 610 miles. I think the early Van Reets where by far the best, if I remember right when Louella first got them they sold a round of late breds of young birds bred the same year.
  12. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Some of you will already know George Stalker died yesterday, this was the result of a tragic accident I hope you will all join me in wishing his family our sincere condolence's.

The meeting was introduced by Lyn Brown who outlined the concerns of the fancy. Tom Dawson then set the scene advising Mr Benn of the real damage that the DEFRA licence conditions and decisions were making to the racing pigeon sport. I outlined in greater detail our concerns, specifically the fact that the pigeon racing in the Channel Islands has been devastated by the fact that DEFRA classes the islands as mainland Europe and therefore any pigeons entered into English races would have to undergo 28 days quarantine. It was pointed out that Dover is closer to France than Guernsey. The 7 day isolation period was also raised, a fact stressed by all our delegates at the meeting. I also challenged DEFRA to produce any evidence that racing pigeons had acted as a bridge for the transmission of AI. We also emphasised the problem of national bans on racing and shows when the problem affected a smaller geographical area. This was no more apparent then last November during the showing season when the AI outbreak in Suffolk saw gatherings at shows cancelled in Cornwall, Wales and the North East. Mr Benn asked many questions and also let the experts he had brought to the meeting about their areas of responsibility to put over their points in response to the ones we had made. He also added that DEFRA will conduct a revision of the Veterinary Risk Assessment (this appears on their website about the potential risk from species). He said that DEFRA had learnt a lot about AI and potential spread from the recent AI outbreak in Dorset and this was the basis for the review. Mr Benn agreed to go away from the meeting and consider what we had said and discuss with his experts. He certainly listened to what we had to say and we hope we had given him and his team food for thought. All our delegates left the meeting with the impression that Mr Benn had listened to our arguments and progress had been made. From a personal point of view I do not believe that DEFRA will exempt us totally from the AI restrictions and therefore we will continue to have some licence conditions imposed on us. But unless we can make progress on the 7 day isolation period and get some respite for our Channel Islanders then we will not have moved forward. We would then have to review what, if any, action we consider for the future. I did ask why we hadn’t yet received a response to our legal letter but was only advised that ‘these things take time’. So, that was what we did at the meeting. Now what can you the fancy do? Prior to the meeting with Mr Benn we had a session with Lyn Brown. She told us that there were now several Members of Parliament sympathetic to our case and would support us to ease restrictions. What she did suggest was for all fanciers to write to their MPs and ask them to sign an Early Day Motion. This is a parliamentary procedure that keeps a particular topic on the agenda in the House, sometimes for months on end. The more fanciers that do this then the more names will appear on the Early Day Motion. Your letter just needs to say: Furthermore, Derek Partridge has collected some 10,000 petition notices so far and Lyn Brown says that these are another valuable tool to let the Prime Minister know the strength of feeling amongst the fancy. If you have not yet submitted the petition then please do so.
