this def works sam,, as i had hens locked in boxes allowing one cock to tread these each day , i didnt do it as exact as you, but did manage to get a good few eggs over a period of time,, i,e any eggs that were fertile in the w,hood hen boxes , i knew what the sire was,, the difficulty i had was ,as hens were laying at different times , was finding a suitable pair to put them under but good read sam ,,well done

weather at the mo, here [the lothians ] still very cold east winds and very low cloud,,nearly 7pm

yes ian quite agree with you,, but surely this is what make rules sometimes lack common sense ,,, it would be quite possible at your marking station to accept entries on the night [which i entirely agree with] but at the same time at maybe some other marking station ,they could, or would, turn someone away,, with no arguement ,,,as the rule book says so,,, so really some clarity on this rule should be put right ,,pronto,,

old logan ,,was a scotsman ;D ;D ;D

this post to me makes perfect sense , unfortunately with this weather situation and a monday [poss] lib., i should imagine , there will be a few in this position

allthough this is a terrible thing to happen ,, i have to say ,,that using" jedburgh justice" [hang them first,,try them later ] is not the answer ,,my opinion is that , at this time gill bros would need all the support and help available , the results of the cctv should proove any wrong doing , and if any culprits are found , hope they are dealt with most severely

difficult to explain in detail really in one post,, but there are many varied ways in this system ,, as to books or videos etc you should find many trawling the internet , one system i have used and been successfull with ,in the past , was having three sections in the loft ,,the middle section with nest boxes , where the pairs breed and rear one round of yb,s after sitting 8 days on their second round of eggs ,, separate the cocks to one end section the hens to the other end section , these sections to have "v" perches ,, the cocks and hens excercised, trained, seperately, then back into their individual sections . then on a friday b4 race entry , allowed together in the middle section where their boxes are for a few mins ,this system does make the birds very keen and providing they are fit,, should win well,, this is just one way of racing both cocks and hens at the same time

is the winner of a national race the best bird , in the race?? [ this will probably be unpopular ],, but i say , no,, not neccessary,, only to the owner.. it sometimes seems unfair to me, that sometimes the" winner of the national" is the be all and end all ,,when there are better pigeons , further down the open result [not allways the case i might add, and with due respect to any national winner],, but there are many circumstances when the winner is not actually the best bird, [in my opinion] i,e any scottish national , just for an instance ,,[could be any national] covers such a vast area to the far north of scot to the far south of scotland and also to the far west of scotland to the far east of scotland ,, the first thing that comes to mind is the wind and the weather , this can be very different in many different parts of scotland at one time. i would say that if the wind was head on right up to the southern borders then changes to south for the rest of scotland ,in this case and ,if the winner was in the borders ,i would say this was the best bird,, but if the opposite were to happen i,e a south wind from the racepoint to the borders then a head wind for the rest of scotland and the winner was somewhere in the rest of scotland , i would say this was the best bird ,, i would say the same goes for the east ,,west old debate,, if the prevailing wind was west and the winner was in the west i would say this was the best bird, the same would go for an east wind ,if the winner was in the east , i would say this was the best bird,,,, but unfortunately this does not allways happen , and because of this,, i say the winner is not allways the best bird ,,, but the winner could be the best bird,,only depending on the circumstances of the race,[the lie of the land included],,i would say , any wise or expert fancier , by looking at the open result and taking all the circumstances of the race into consideration , would be able to pick out the best bird , whether it be the winner or the 20th bird in that particular race, be it in the north the south the east or the west ,,,,,,,,but what i do say is ,,the best bird does not allways get the proper recognition ,if indeed it didnt win the race , so i would formerly like to congratulate the fanciers of the best pigeon in the forthcomming national races and would certainly hope the best bird is the winner. good luck to all competitors ,,,,,and may the best bird win

i think [according to what i have seen you build] you would be able to make a good job of making these bull boxes , im sure someone will supply you with a drawing or picture [ill try and get one for you if poss] but genuinly beleive you would be a dab hand at making these,, their used a lot by the big breeders,
-
welcome to the forum,, im quite sure you will soon be organized with a few lovely fantails best of luck
-
now b4 you jump down my throat ;D ;D ;D a pigeon bullbox is used for breeding one cock with many hens ,, a bit more to it than that , but really thats the basic idea

after speaking with pigeon tracker and enquiring about getting two pigeons delivered from lincoln to midlothian , have to say he was more than co-opertive,,he has agreed to deliver the two birds in individual boxes for a maximum of £35 ,on wednesday comming ,,,, but with more deliveries comming up ,or indeed pickups going back down,,,,he would hope to reduce this charge considerably to all ,, also supplying boxes free,, cant be any fairer than this,, also promises ,, the pigeons come first

i have found if broken either at the elbow or the ankle part,, this is actually better left alone , within a day or two the bird will manage ok with one leg and [especially a yb] and begin to use the broken leg within a week [self physiotherapy],,and be able to walk perfectly well in a fortnight [different at the shoulder part] i have found that splints [unless done by a vet after x ray] can actually leave the bird with a limp
-
this seems to have been the case all year ,, and some really have been lucky all weather seems bad untill monday,, but at this stage[ friday], can the weathermen be right ,,even for monday it does seem its a case of grabbing any possible break at any time ,at , the time
-
6 years,, lost from worcester as a yb ,,returned 6 years later ,,,doesnt say much, maybe , for its racing ability ,,,but boy,,,,what a memory ;D
-
you will find a pigeon has the most amazing memory , they really just never forget,, i.e one jumps out the sputnick once as a yb ,,itll do the same at 10 years old,, if a bird feeds off your hand once as a yb ,,ittl do it again ,, if one flies over your head at the loft door ittl do it again,,,,,,,,quite a lot of food for thought ??
-
have a great time ,,tam and chrissy ,,,,,,,get your suntan lotion in the uk,, i think its now buy one,,, get six free ;D
-
looking at the weather f/cast ,,it looks shocking, untill monday,, , but with the changable weather weve been having all" summer :( ;D] and the weather forecasting has been un-predictable on many occasions ,, god only knows someone somewhere just might get a race :-/

any fanciers care to comment on weather f/cast and any poss racing , sat sun or mon [bucketing here at the moment [in the lothians]

i have to say that i am not clear about this also,, first of all the perigrine , sparrowhawk are comming off the endangered list ,,do we know this to be true and factual?? [i certainly hope so anyway], so am i thinking right in saying that this would put these birds in the same category of any other wild bird?? meaning it is illegal to shoot or kill any wild bird,,,but farmers, gamekeepers even sportsmen kill crows ,,wood pigeon [you quite often see dead crows hung up on a farmland fence to [i take it to deter other crows from their crops ] and there seems to be big sport in shooting wood pigeon, pheasant grouse etc in fact the land owners receive quite a big income on this , if this is true, that these birds of prey come off the endangered list,,surely must put them in the same category of any other wild bird ,,off course pheasant ,grouse, wood pigeon , must , i would think, come under game birds ,,but surely crows, and magpies [same family] would come under the same category as the birds of prey ,, but the farmers openly shoot crows as being pests , without being fined , i just cannot see them being able to shoot birds of prey,, yet ,being taken off the endangered species act, must then surely put them in the same categary as ordinary wild birds such as crows,, im afraid i just cannot get my head around this ?? maybe someone can explain,, the question being,, what exactly does this "comming off the endangered list "mean ???

"going light " in pigeons is not a recognised desease, its more a phrase we use as an ailment causing this" going light" "yb sickness" is not a recognised desease, and more a phrase that fanciers use,, in sick yb,s both these conditions could be due to many factors, the most common one is e,coli, causing y.birds to be sick and loose weight, usually followed on [like most of these type ailments ] with secondry infections,,,,,,,,,but worms cocci, canker will make any birds go light if infested and any one of these problems can [due to the weakened immune system ] cause secondry and even thirdly infections in the pigeons , of any of these type,,,,,,, i,e any one of these infections, usually follow on with any of the other , so for a start its well worth keeping the worms,,cocci, and canker level below, the danger level, therefore giving the bird a better chance of fighting any e coli infection it may catch ,,, prevention is sometimes better than the cure,, most of these ailments are due to stress , too many birds in to small a loft , not enough air space, and dirty lofts,, but off course birds can contract these ailments ,when put beside birds from these type of lofts i,e transporters baskets etc, therefore quite a battle at times to keep these ailments at bay.
