yes,, this is just rediculous, especially, for other fanciers,, it is illegal to kill any bird of prey, im afraid its as simple as that, so any so called fanciers shouting about themselves killing b.o.p risk being prosecuted and put other fanciers in bad light,
-
an excellent post,, and very true ,, the only thing is, we cant do much about yesterday [in some cases ],, but can do a lot for, and about tomorrow, if we can face the face in the mirror each evening and say" i know i could have did better, but i did try and do my best" ,,,,,yes, being positive is got to be the way forward,,,,,, theres a lot of fanciers ruining the hobby of keeping pigeons without even realising it themselves , yes we should use the mirror more often ,sadly, before its too late .

;D ;D ;D if its any consolation colin,,[free ad for you ;D] i was 4th section yb snfc with a bird bred from m and d evans, myrtle lofts,, via,, my mate charlie wooff , allthough i was advised not to send it furter than 400 miles , scored a top position with it from snfc sartilly 505 miles as a two year old [this bird "the myrtle cock" won 7 races so,,best of luck to you p,s think walker and wilson will win the open,,in a different race to st abbs [no offence to walker and wilson] than racing to up here

wonder if anyone knows of "2201" bred and raced by a mr W Ferar of peterborgh, flown lerwick four times winning 4th sec.13 open in 1946, 8th sec 42 open in 1947 2cnd sec. 11th open in 1948,, ,,,,the date on this issue of the gazette is the 1st of april 1950,, the bird certainly didnt make a fool of mr Ferrar you could actualy handle this pigeon by just looking at the pic, ,

d,d,t was used a lot in these days , yet didnt seem to have any bad effects on the birds except keep them clean,,,remember we used to get keatings powder,, then pestroy,, the rspb blamed the ddt [which is banned now] for the decline in the hawk population :-/ :-/ :-/,, the pigeons got more ddt pumped over them than the hawks yet they survived ?

yes, this is another trend thats dissapearing,, club shows ,, loanhead used to hold open shows every week through out the winter ,, different classes each week ,usually of a weekday evening,,many other clubs did the same , this was a great social night out, no arguements ,,only what everyone was "going to do,,next year ;D" then there were many fed open shows at weekends , this was a day out there were many "moots"which usually provided a few laughs ;D , but really informative for fanciers old and new alike. then there was off course your club presentation , then, a collar and tie job with set tables and a good meal,, now most clubs hand the trophies out in the pub with" jeans" on another thing that has dissapeared was the ladies nom,, which , off course encouraged the wifes, it wasnt a cash prize , but anything of their choice, to the value of :)which they were presented to at the" doo dance"and had their pics taken with all their finary on then off course was the fanciers kids christmas party , where all the kids got a present from santa ;D[ paid for by the dads ;D,], but the wives did most of the work for this .[usually pics in the local paper] all this got families taking part and kept the wifes happy [just for a wee while ;D ;D ;D] all this, cleverly made sense ,, also clubs organising bus trips to maybe a night club, for members and their freinds,,,, .nowt now,,except argueing ;D but looking at the good side its never too late to change :-/

how many races to go??

well one thing is better nowadays ;D ;D ;D how to get rid of red mite ,lice etc, in , 1954 ,, brand new invention [i,b will laugh at this one] THE VERMINATER ;D ;D ;D [with foot pump action off course ;D] to delouse the birds with this, had you fitter than your pigeons ;D ;D ;D [this was off course the days of d,d,t, ]

yes,, it does sound like fiction,, but unfortunately true,, not that many years ago ,i tossed about 40 yb,s from an army training camp, whatever went on there, at that time , i do not know,, but this 20 mile traing toss was a disaster , with about 30 bewilldered birds making it in a few days [none injured] but refusing to beleive many local fanciers ,,"that something was going on there which was upsetting the birds homing ability" took the remaining birds back there [once they had gathered their wits] and the same hapened again [perfect weather ],,,, at that point, i began to [against my own judgement] beleive these fanciers,, i then took the remaining yb,s [about 20] 20 miles further on from this point [a 40 mile toss] all the birds were in the loft when i got home ,, so it does make you wonder,, if , like albear has said,, " some secret instalation, or the like,up there,, interfering, with the homing ability of the birds" just makes you wonder at times its not just the birds,,good, birds , or bad birds,, its something more than that,, incidently one of albears birds , a yearling, scored well in a near 500 mile race up this way very recently , for a good freind of mines

away with you lennut ;D ;D ;D ,,how about my old meally [63,,28228], scored in every club race from 60 to 360 miles as a yb and yearling [still have the cerificates ;D] THEN ;D scoring 9 TIMES at between 505 miles and 608 miles ,,,winning £98 two and ninepence in the snfc at 9 YEARS OLD ;D winning a 98 mile club race the same year ;D with 4 times the birdage nowadays ,,,even "sir colin" won two 200 mile races then 4 times between 5 to over 600 miles[inc 2cnd national] b4 having his wing broken at 4 years old [after winning 5000 grand ;D] dae dont makem like at nowadays ;D ;D ;D

my goodness vic ,, certainly some subscripton, and as you say,, it would be somewhere around that in todays money,,anyway glad you got the details you were after ,as it was your post that started "the old and the new,," yes ,, we can still get velocities of 1019 , but when you do,, the second one is about 919 ;D ;D ;D not 1018 as was then :-/ :-/ :-/ ;D , but have to agree when you say " theres is, without a doubt ,, something going on" but the big question is ,,",what," my own veiw is ,, that it is a combination of many things,,, partly due to the way ,we have managed pigeons over a period of years ,,,,,and a lot we just dont know enough about ??
-
you see ,,,,allthough meaning well, ive no doubt ,,but starts a flame war,,,,"thought the rpra could have something organised ,,, the s h u lead the way again",,,,,,, THIS , my freind, gives fodder for the hungry"
-
thanks shadow,, just noticed this ,, good luck to all

i can quite understand your posting ,,j. a. me,, [most certainly the second part ;D ;D ;D] as thats a long way to travel, in basketing your birds , but if the benefits outweigh the downfalls, im sure your better being happy , and having harmony in your club ,,,,but have to say, in the first part , allthough you do see the same ones winning most times , i find they are still having great losses ,, the strange thing being,, years ago ,if it was a bad race,, the birds seemed to drop in , the rest of the day , then the remainder were usually there next morning,, it seems , now,, if you dont get them within an hour of the first birds , you get very few back,, maybe even just the odd one , [if any even],,,,,this is most definately a different trend, than what happened years ago,, when most of the birds did struggle back , some beit late
-
well done sam,, great to see the young fanciers showing the old ones a thing or two ;D ;D brilliant result
-
well done,, bet your over the moon, and quite rightly too

i thank you very much ,,vic, for the kind thought, in my opinion the fancier of today is completely different to the fanciers of old,, then each pigeon was treated as an individual, and each individual fancier new each bird , could pick their own pigeon out of" any amount" of pigeons , im afraid to to say that is mostly not the case now,, some dont even recognise their own bird in a basket of 12 [i say some, not all ] the old time fancier had a close bond with his or her birds , which doesnt seem to be there anymore,in a lot of cases ,,Who, today would walk at least 5 miles with his father [from gilmerton to newton village] with a cardboard egg box to basket them at the club in 1954 ;D [a brand new clean one was used every week ;D, no desease in that "basket" and it was free ;D] and after walking this [dad took the clock on his bike on race day,,,on the carrier behind the seat] but in walking this ,it did you good, your dreams went higher, your goals went higher in evey yard you walked , but you learned to suffer defeat the hard way,, , but this did make you look, learn, and listen to the top guys of that time ,,,as walking this, and being last every single week [or allmost] was more than you could suffer , so you had to better yourself , and you did to me , it seems that pigeons are just numbers now, here today,, gone tomorrow,,,but today has the disadvantages of the hawks ect,,,,and for whatever reason , no matter what anyone says , the modern day pigeon does not have the amount of faculty or homing instict that pigeons had many years ago [ i often wonder the reason for this, ] whether its the actual birds , or other external matters ,ie airwaves, even global warming ,,,,or a combination of it all ,,,,could it be possible now,? to race 9 yb,s from the first toss to the yb national, which was 300 miles then in 1958,, and have 7 left,, winning the r,u yb ave with 42 members, allways over 500 birds away in club, 710 birds one week [now sadly down to about 10-12 members approx] as the losses get more, and the members get less,,,,with more smart alex, cheeky, and downright nasty, argumentative fanciers who dont even know, they are helping in ruining the fancy, rather than sincere witty fanciers, working in harmony , with honest intentions, and attracting fanciers , i really think we should think of how things were done in yesteryear ,also, not without its difficulties ,learn a lot from these hard days and put it to good use nowadays ,,,if each fancier , each night looked into the mirror and could honsestly say "ive did my best today" i honestly think the fancy would be all the better for it

shall put the post on the" lost board" later ,, therefore bringing it back to the top again ,,, hope you get them back
