  2. can anyone remember bobos 4 season herbs [bo bo,s herbs] and if so ,can they remember what the herbs were,, ?
  3. i have found that cypermethrin wash [deosect] is one of the cheapest and best ways to rid pigeon lice, mixing 10ml in 500ml of water and spraying the birds nestpans etc directly ,, a 100ml bottle made up for me [including gloves ] cost me £6,,,,, would spray a lot of birds 5,000 mls of solution
  4. yb,s having 8 flights to go , would certainly be in better condition for races,,right now, and should be holding their body feathers well and tight, but it must be remembered these yb,s will have a second body moult after theve cast their 4th 5th flight,, and if, to make good yearlings ,must have a complete moult ,, as in the past ive found that if the body moult has not started as of now,, they usually hold the last flight , then at the yearling stage ,after casting their second flight , can also throw this last flight at the same time [i found out to my disadvantage ]
  5. hi jimmy,,allthough your dead keen on bringing these yb,s up, my own thoughts are that nature is the best way, hand rearing is pretty difficult and ,really unless expertly done, will usually result in poor specimans [sorry to say],,, if these are rollers ,two adult retired racing pigeons,[good feeders] would probably supply enough pigeon milk to feed three newly hatched rollers ,but again this is not natural for any pigeon to feed three beaks , so really i think by doing this , youll loose out ,and maybe even breed three or even less weaker birds than normal,, its a very difficult time for any pair to rear up two yb,s let alone three, so in my opinion ,i would just let each pair rear naturally,, and with a little patience youll soon breed enough rollers to form a good kit , but wish you luck in whatever you decide
  6. so many great results and great fanciers, mentioned in the past posts from all over, and in different organisations , i most certainly would not like to pick one as a winner , in my eyes their all winners
  7. welcome to the site terrierman look forward to reading your posts
  8. yes i agree, this can be controlled to some extent, by keeping the loft rodent free as poss, i,e by leaving no grain around at all , even at this ,,you will still get the odd one or two at times , really a case of trying to keep the loft and surroundings as rodent free as is possible , but allthough rats and mice can be a very bad source for this desease, off course there are many other causes , i find ,as advised by my vet , that virkon s. is another of the disenfectants , that have been approved by defra , i have found since using this i have had no desease at all [this covers all deseases] i honestly cant speak highly enough of this ,and allthough i know that any desease can creep in at any time , i have certainly had no problems since using this product, any questions about this product ,you can e,mail biosecurity@gbc.dupont.com, or find out more about this product www.virkons.com
  9. i think there are many good w- hood systems as such, but the best system is the one that suits you as far as work or commitments etc , dave alan.s w-hood system is very simplified in his book, and has proved to be a good method
  10. allthough, not a lot of help,,, a, mr george dawes [cant even remember where from] had , or still has, a great small stud, containing all the best lines of the old kirkpatrick family , i know for a fact he purchased direct offspring of many kirkpatrick nat winners , maybe someone who has heard or known him could help ,

  22. first of all , i would go to the best flier, usually of many years [of the distances you prefer] in your own locality , i,e birds flying the same terrain , then obtain his methods and management [irrespective of strains] then if i thought my inbred birds could come up to his standards , would cross them with his ,if i could obtain them
  23. just wondering ,however good or bad your season has been , what would you most certainly not do again....? what would you definately do again ? please just plain honest answers
  24. if there were any so called" breed" better than any other so called" breed" it would soon stick out a mile away , so quite simply theres not,, you dont see the van this or that on the same reults for years ,,,,,,but you do see the same fanciers just give me a good honest hard working pigeon, a mongrel bred from winners , combined with a good manager, bobs your uncle ,,, some fanciers have more money than sense
  25. having read all the very good posts on this, my beleive is that this desease [as in many deseases ,many types] is the most serious ,often ,unseen desease in pigeons , even a droppings test ,may not give you an accurate result . probably one of the few deseases that can even spread inside the egg, usually resulting in" dead in the shell" but some do hatch , these are actually born carriers , other cariers can be birds that have contracted this desease , mostly due to mice and rats infestations , i,e a bird that may have a drooped wing [having no injury] just a classic example , where , im afraid a lot of fanciers will swear blind "it must have hurt its wing " this bird ,if not put down ,should be thoroghly tested by a good avian vet ,,,however to go on to vics question ,, could this be the reason for yb losses in my opinion i would say this could be just one PART of it, as i think there are many reasons, but paratyphoid ,like many deseases will mutate and change over time , and quite possibly play a PART in the loss in yb,s , in being a" serious and uncontrolable desease" my thoughts are, this can be controlled ,to a certain extent, by loft hygeine ,by having birds tested on a regular basis , rather than be treated willy nilly , which will make any desease mutate, and a far strickter " selection"made to pigeons in any loft .,,as far as yb losses are concerned my thoughts are there are many reasons and like a big jig saw puzzle ,this could be one part
