  9. im sorry if my answer to albear upset anyone, i can assure you it wasnt meant to,, just thought it polite to answer him
  10. these are often called protein lumps [why, i dont know] some say too much protein , but sometimes only one bird gets this ?,, allthough they look bad , their normally easy cured and cause no further damage to the bird, i have in the past ,,tied cotton arround the base of it pretty tight , this stops the circulation , to it , then it drops off,
  11. i thank you larry most sincerely for your honest answer , and your most valuable and interesting posts,, however ;D [you will be calling me a pest now ;D] again with due respect , in reading of one of your recent postings on this subject, could it be possible that by injecting with paramyxo vaccine without changing the needles per bird , as a lot of fanciers do,, that this indeed could spread any paratyphoid that may be lurking ? then rather than say, since weve been vaccinating for paramyxo virus, weve found something amiss with the birds ,,it could be said that a lot of us have been injecting wrongly ,i,e by using the same needle too many times ,thus, spreading any paratyphoid that may be lurking ??
  12. i read your post really with sad thoughts, and really feel for you,, my sincere condolences ,, so sorry about your uncle, at such a young age, im quite sure saddened greatly over this , but , theres allways a future , no matter what ,,given time ,, its very understandable your thinking at the moment , but once youve gotten through this sad episode a little , who knows , you may just wake up one morning and say ,,right now is the time,, then battle on , keep the pigeons and for your families sake ,your grandad , your uncle, then show other fanciers what you can do , just think of the warm glow , winning a race , knowing full well your grandad and uncle would be proud of you ,it may not be right away ,but given time and thought,, youll pick yourself up,, dust yourself down then battle on ,,,its the only way ,,good luck to you my freind
  13. in reading vic,s last post i must say i agree with him entirely,, maybe harsh sounding but nevertheless true ,,most ordinary vets know less than some fanciers about pigeons , and ,really just make money by giving a prescription for x amount of birds with x amount of medicine [usually a common broad spectrum antibiotic] any pigeon fancier must deal with a really top avian vet with pigeon experience i also beleive a lot of problems have arisen since we started paramyxo vaccination [and there seems no going back the way now] this paratypoid [allthough been with us a long time] with lots of new medication and the paramyxo vacine ,,,,to my mind , would have to have mutated in some way or form through the years ,, god only knows of which form.or even forms,,," their ability to home "or their magical" whatever" that makes them into racing pigeons , has most definately diminished in the last 20 years ,and more apparent in the last 5 years but,,,still getting worse year by year, i certainly dont know the answer ,, i still feel like its a big jigsaw puzzle , we can fit some small peices together as to some reasons , but feel theres a big chunk missing alltogether ,and if we dont find it , i just wonder what will become of pigeon racing in 20 years time,,,,,and have to repeat,," but mark vics words , there is something alien within most of our birds these days"
  14. in my opinion some yb,s are bred too early i,e hatched dec, these birds off course really are in fact late late latebreds and are on the natural darkness system , i have found nothing to gain by this , and really your just feeding them an extra couple of months , if its yb,s you want to win with i found the end of jan pairings the best ,then put straight on darkness using curtains ,still letting them out [plenty baths induce the moult],but keeping them in ,with the curtains closed between 5 of an evening till 9 in the morning at this time i fed plenty maples along with some seeds , putting them on full daylight on the longest day,, then lighten the diet then make them work hard ,,,during the scond moult just after the national usually found plenty rest plenty baths again some seeds ,they fully moulted without any artificial light, this is just very basic , but hope this helps
  15. have to say,,jimmy,, that jamie delivered birds for me and castlea lofts from different parts of england ,,,on the same day as pick up ,,last week and had other pickup deliveries too, on the same day , so i really thought he put in some effort into do this ,,,hope all goes well with your delivery
  16. with due respect larry, this sounds good in eliminating the carrier state of paratyphoid in a pigeon [which could save a lot of pigeons and lesson a problem], but allthough my question might seem a bit silly, [its not meant to be ] could this carrier state in the pigeon,, now [say] cured by baytrill and vaccination [sal-bac] , become a carrier again ?? at any other time ,,,,, or once being a carrier and cured , will be immune to catching this again ??
  17. i thinkthe reason probablybeing the lightness yb has to fully moult its flights as well as body moult, and the chances are,,,unless very early bred and more or less" force" moulted,, it could be moulting its last flights when they first few races start [even when training] the darkness system seems more popular as , as soon as theve finished their body moult are ready to train i,e retaining their nest flights in my veiw the darkness yb,s are best,,[ for winning yb races ], but these have to moult all flights b4 pairing the next seson , which sometimes if timed wrongly ,doesnt allways happen , and if this doesnt happen, will upset the moult as a yearling
  18. i see by your past posts ,,tangoboy, your 14 years old say you wouldnt have time to keep fancypigeons,,, if that be so, im afraid you would need more time to keep and race pigeons, as you would soon find out yourself , but if keen enough, can manage anything in the keeping and racing of pigeons , very cheaply indeed ,,,,if you wanted to do this seriously enough, my advice would be to visit all your local pigeon shows which are held in the winter,, get to know as many fanciers as possible , get chatting to them , ask them the questions youve asked here ,, youll find the keener they see you , the more they will help,,and the more info you will receive i.e clubs in your area etc,, study all the pages of pigeon basics , youll find a lot of your answers there , so in the meantime best of luck , and hope to see you with a loft of pigeons soon ,,,,,theres a few young lads racing pigeons , members of pigeon basics,, seek these lads out , befreind them, and find out from them how they managed it etc ,,you can do anything you want if you really try
  19. second page when young keith yule , one of five kids ,about a year between them , no dad, this young lad was the greatest help to me ever , knew what it was like to have nowt, but a happier young lad youdnever have found ,,pigeon mad,, rewarded to a holiday of a lifetime , paid by the b h w. to a very rich fanciers family in germany where he was in his glory
  20. think that was one of the diamond dove ;D ;D cant put a new pic on at the moment ;D ;D ;D had all me top teeth out,,,,,exept one ;D ;D ;D a sight for sore eyes ;D ;D ;D even the grand kids are frightened of me ;D ;D ;D "the fang" ;D
  21. many congratulations robbie,, and off course to mother ,,who did most of the work ;D god bless all three of you
  22. it must be remembered that my loft was broken into and sir, colin,s wing broken at 4 years old , off course no one could ever say he would have scored again, but for a distance pigeon he was just in his prime . my vote would undoubtingly go to auld reekie of w kinnear and son .for winning positions but there has been many great pigeons over the years fortune lady [the only double gold award winner ] must rate as one of the best ever over its ten year racing carreer . one seldom mentioned is l mitchell of inverkeithing,s b pied hen , this pigeon being 8th open in the hardest rennes race ever [only 21 timed in race time] scored a total of 7 times from over 500 miles
  23. basicly the lightness system is obviusly the exact opposite to the darkness system,, whereas the darkness system is fooling the yb,s birds its winter ,by giving them winter hours daylight , where [like latebreds , natuarly dark nights ] they will have a full body moult ,but retain all their nest flights. the lightness system is fooling them in winter ,,,that it is summer,,, by giving them summer daylight hours artificialy whereas these winter bred yb,s will have had a complete moult , including their flights. may i add a word of warning though, allthough i have flown both of these systems quite successfully[just for the sake of winning a yb race] i am now under the impression of,,,,fight against nature,,,,,,,,and it will fight back
  24. the reason i mention this is i used these years ago , seemed to do the birds good [def no harm anyway] but never ever thought of finding out which herbs they were
