grease mark on flights...
jimmy white replied to DAVIDL's topic in Help - What's wrong with my bird?
difficult to tell what this grease mark is, over the internet,, could be a few things ,,, do you mix cod liver oil in the grub,, this is famous for marking them [but son comes off] even hormoform , can mark their flights,[again cleans up quick] have they sat near a chimney, this often slightly marks them could be many things , the pigeon has an oil gland on its back [youll be able to feel or even see it ,if you part the feathers ] this is why , when the bird preens itself you will notice it starting off from this gland on the back , then , usualy the flights , this is to clean the flights and waterproof them [if you find this gland , then stimulate the tip of it with your finger , youll see a tiny spot of oil on your finger ] usually when a bird is in very good condition, this oil gland can and will produce slightly more oil than normaly, so could be due do with this ,,,, as i say, only guesses , if your birds are flying well , there cant be much wrong with them anyway -
"how do racing pigeons navigate "in my opinion they use many things,, mostly the sun , but do they recognise land marks , even by smell, or the earths magnetism ,, many many unanswered questions ,,all theories ,, truth is we dont know for sure ,, we only know that whatever it is , the fitter the bird the better it can work its compass ,,and its wings

it is a lot of work patty bhoy, but if perfected can work well, with both cocks and hens , i would prefer the w,hood system flying cocks i hour am then i hour pm [rest in between], but there are as many systems ,as there are races, so theres many roads lead to rome,,,,,,,,,the system that suits your times ,work, etc is best,,, when perfected
-
widowhood ,, a good system for all races ,, but in 5 to 600 mile races some birds will race better w hood , some natural , depends on the individual bird , sometimes a good natural hen can be the dab hand in these races ,, but its the old story,, horses for courses ,,,but know your horses

in the past ive purchased many good winning pigeons ,and mated these together ,some with no luck as such, but birds bred from these , picking their own mates [as previous post mentions] i have bred some of my best pigeons , that have raced well and bred well

this would be my pick no problem cant see in the pic, if his last flight is right up [fully grown] ,, bring him indoors overnight make sure hes well fed long b4 going into the show, as he could bring the grub back up during the traveling,, best of luck,, all nice birds ,, theres another b, cheq cock ,looks 3 or 4 years old a very nice bird , but would still go for the b bar :),, ive found b4 the less tampering with them the better , so any steaming feathers , cleaning feet , the odd dirty bit , would do the day b4 , then keep him in basket overnight,,,,, he would look nice with a red card next to him

hope your birds get well i would be very wary of an avian vet charging you this amount , without giving you a precise diagnosess. like many other jobs , there are some good at their job, and some not so good ,,, how can you possibly mend something when you dont even know its broken?? this is an example of a vet just taking your money on a guess ,, not really the way ,, my thoughts are, hes more interested in making money than curing/diagnosing birds a really top class avian vet , really gennuine in caring and healing birds , would have gave you a diagnoses , then the medicine to cure it,, then send you a break down bill , for the cost of the visit , and the cost of the medicines , etc,, theres no way these medicines would tally up to that amount, however i must say that you have did well and proper in your actions, regarding your pigeons, but no diagnoses, and a large bill like that!! , i would be seriously thinking of a second opinion ,,,,,,,,,,from the cit, advice

trying this, scanned result,, put in" my pictures" now ill try and put on this post as an attach. i shouldnt think it will be big enough to see the actual result , but dont know if it can be enlarged

yes, only the racers as the stock birds should be kept as they are,, breeding winners [if not,, they shouldnt be stock ]
-
yes, i am of the opinion the hawk will be back,, after some time ,,, so keep the" A" team at the ready same as a cat , if it gets a really good fright , it will stay away , but gain its confidence and be back ,,, i say this as at one time i kept birds in a yard where there were greyhound men , a cat at my loft just escaped [talk about 9 lives ] the mouth of a greyhound [by a whisker ] as the cat jumped the wall , the greyhound managed a nip at it , and had a little of the cats fur on its mouth,,, the owner of the cat blamed me for killing his cat ,as it had" dissapeared" ,, he apologised when his cat reurned about 3 days later, it kept well back from the loft, for a while ,,,, but one day,,,,, :( ;D,

big question ,, i prefer" love matings" but this is not allways possible , as you may have pairs you want together , but if your birds are of good calibre , you would be pleasantly surprised , if you" paired freely",,, by watching them closely , and observing closely , you can" nudge " certain pairs together.
-
during their seperation period , i would let a cock and hen outside together ,for an hour or so, then repeat with another pair , every now and again through the winter ,, most cocks would have their own box, so when pairing up time comes,,,,it makes things slight;y easier word of warning when pairing,, yearling cocks can be very cruel, and possibly scalp the hen if not carefull, usually an upside down galley pot is put in, [or a half brick] so the hen can jump on this to avoid an aggressive cock

there was a great thread on b4 about genetics etc, i have topped the fed b4 with a bird, bred from two nest mates [both fed winners] , this happened by accident , as i borrowed my freinds fed winner [he approached me] to mate with my fed winner , then split the youngsters between each other,, after i had topped the fed with this yb , i asked ny freind for the borrowed birds pedigree [i knew we got them from the same place] ,,,this is when we found out , the parents were in fact nest mates i dont think i would advocate that [but it certainly worked in this situation] i have found , that by mating a good" inbred to winners," hen,,,,,,,,to a different " inbred to winners " cock , have prooved to be good racers, as then it becomes "the hybrid vigour" [which can lack in closely inbred pigeons] have also found father and daughter breeding, or daughter to son breeding , ideal for the above matings ,i.e producing race winners
