  3. on the 23rd March I lost one of my best hen birds, i had been waiting a year to breed from her and she had just laid a couple of eggs. she went out of the loft for a fly late in the afternoon, leaving her mate behind....... she never returned. I blamed every hawk in the area this morning 10 days later my neighbour came round, he had heard scratching in one of his cavity walls, and after cutting a hole to find out what it was out popped the hen bird. A little thinner but in general good health. well done to the cowboy builders that at one time had removed an internal chimney stack and not bothered about putting up an RSJ and blanking off the remainder of the stack... leaving ample room for wild life to wander around my neighbours property in the secret passages kev
  4. Its sunday afternoon and I'm sat here thinking (dangerous occupation) Now a days there is nearly always a by-product or other usage for most natural grown produce to make my bird budget last longer what else can a weekly supply of 6 large sacks of fresh poop and easybed be used for, other than filling the dustbin ?? kev
  5. i've just spent the evening responding to security systems going off due to a LURKING PUSSY... there has been more flashing lights with the little bugger than if a football crowd had been near the loft best bit is, it jumps onto a neighbours property and stares back as though to say you cant get me, it even watches my car and if i drive away it goes straight to the loft.... habits can be dangerous. kev
  6. if i can settle the adult birds down, and get rid of one or two of the furry critters that prowl round the loft i should have some spare youngsters late august, let me know if you are interested kev

  11. the cat got locked in the loft in one moment of lack of concentration, i was due to be working out of town for two days, so i fed the birds early one morning with enough food and water to last until i got back the follwing evening then i took some bits and pieces to the car, returning to lock the loft door.....in the short time i was at the car the cat had gone in and i shut the door on it... thank goodness for the security door which forms an enclosed entrance to the birds and the cats that roam around are not mine, i am now looking at getting an electric fence, just need to locate a company that can give me some advice on how to set it up correctly, not just a company who sell them
  12. less than 3 months into 2009 i have added up the problems encountered in the loft, in 43 years of breeding various types of birds i've never had so many problems.... is anyone else having similar problems 1) Pussy cat locked in the loft for two days.. (dont ask how, it was my fault) 2) more pussy cats prowling around the loft, on the loft, and under the loft 3) 3 birds taken by hawks as they were flying around the loft birds left so skittish the results of breeding are 2 young left cold by parents ( both died) 5 dead in shell 16 infertile 2 broken eggs 11 weaned 2 still in nest 4 eggs in nests at moment severe fighting with some of the cock birds, resulting in each having to be locked up in boxes kev
  13. drove over to doncaster today, and visited the dome for the pigeon show, as a child it was my play ground as grandparents house backed onto the airport where the dome and the other units have been built. thank goodness those memories are still vivid, as i cant remember what i saw today other than many over priced and over rated racing birds, with stalls selling goods which really didnt offer any decent discounts, maybe just me but nothing special to warrent the expense kev
  14. hi put a video camera in the loft and see what they get up to compared to the other birds kev

    PROBLEM

i have 2 hens mated with one cock bird at the moment and they have produced 4 chicks, i removed 2 eggs to another pair to save having one of the eggs getting chilled as i found they only managed to cover 3 eggs, of the two that remained with the trio all three birds took it in turns to sit the eggs and feed the young when they hatched. I'm waiting to see what happens with the next round of 4 eggs !!! thats if they dont get a divorce. the only alteration i have made for them was to provide a 12 inch x 9 inch nest box made from a mushroom crate plus i have a trio of Java doves behaving in the same way they are also sat on 4 eggs......must be something in the water kev
  18. thanks were is it advertised ?
  19. is there a pigeon show / exhibition or sales at the doncaster dome saturday 28th march, i thought i had seen one advertised but cant find the details now kev

    radio

I have a radio on during the day, when it gets turned off the birds seem to know its time to settle down for the night the only downside is the strangers that drop in from time to time are never in a rush to go back to their own lofts, and when i take them 40 miles away to fly home, guess were i find them on my return.......I also use it to keep cats away kev
  22. ive heard computer scanners are very good at turning A4 sheets of white paper in to a few £20 notes................. obviously i havent tried it kev
  23. only had one problem a cock bird went in the wrong box and the mayhem cost 2 eggs that another pair had, but that can happen anytime in any best box system ive been cleaning them out with ease, i bought some spare boxes and have these prepared ready to swap over, then just hot spray the dirty boxes and leave those prepared for the next clean out. wait til i post a few pics of the latest cheaper alternative idea i had, its a typical yorkshire mans short arms, deep pockets thinking kev
  24. The box must be ok, the cock bird has scored 2 out of 2, and the pair have sat the eggs through to hatching, both birds must be at ease and feel safe in the box kev
