I fed the birds about 10am, everything checked and ok in the loft, went out for a few hours and on my return was surprised to find one of the pairs who were nesting on a shelf had moved their nest approx 18inch, and not only had they moved all the nesting material they had even moved their egg. kev

  11. thanks for the comments guys, the hen is up and about today, and has returned to her nest box, although her eggs were replaced with a pot one, and the originals put in an incubator, she can have them back in a couple of days must have been a trapped nerve kev
  12. has anyone come across a problem when the hen lays an egg she loses the use of her legs, in every other way she is perfectly fit, eats drinks, but can not walk, all the other birds appear to treat her as if nothing is wrong she was laying for the second time and is an early bred 2009 bird, she has been eating a mixed diet with occaisional added wheat germ oil and gratted cuttlefish/iodine.. grit and fresh greens have also been available kev
  13. its interesting to read the comments as to wether the boxes work as nest boxes or not, ive just started to use the boxes again this year as i put the birds down to breed and so far i'm getting 100% success in them being used re the aspect of cleaning. i have two sets of boxes, and replace any dirty boxes with a clean and prepared box, then simply wash with a bleach solution and rinse with a hosepipe during the non breeding weeks they have been folded flat and stored out of the way, i find them a win win product in many ways, price - easy to maintain - easy to store - and would be easy to obtain more if i wanted to add to the number i use good luck to all during the breeding weeks kev
  14. no it was free, but they do sell the dried stalks that are the waste from extracting the oil K

  18. the idea is good, but how does your friend prove its a falcon that was released, and has he got deep pockets to pay the lawers etc..... thats the hurdles that would be in his way to have a positive end to the problem when suing the local council kev
  19. a while ago one of mine dropped down a neighbours chimney and he found it 10 days later, it was a little dusty but appeared ok and was flying within a couple of days or so. It bred a few youngsters this summer then only a few weeks ago a local cat got into the loft although it couldnt actually reach the birds due to safety mesh, the above mentioned bird was dead a week later, ............ kev
  20. spot on with your description of the birds, and they are quick to realise who has the food for them in a morning, the chicks soon come running for their scrambled egg !! kev

  23. I had problems with my birds developing a habit of picking at the morter in a neighbours chimney, they eventually caused a large gap in a row of bricks.... i found using a catapult with rolled balls of wet newspaper to move them and they soon got the message kev
  24. update on the bird, it was found by a neighbour in hull docks and it looks like it has been the victim of a hawk strike, its left wing is very messed up, much of it is missing and the remainder is bits of feather and bone plus a few maggots that have been removed. on the upside the bird is strong and eating well, and now waiting for a lift home
