Interesting topic & comments etc Johno & much of what you say is more than likely true I have no doubt, & when you add up all the costs involved in distance racing, to get the birds there for a release. Unfortunately !!!!!! many would say it is not worth the cost or the effort etc, for the end result sadly. To me thou, it's a cost I'm willing to bare within reason :P to at times have that enjoyment & pleasure of timing in when flying the distance races in my area. Now !!!!!!! I note your figures were worked out on 300 birds etc (Not many) & I also understand there is a difference in regards to how we all go about doing the figures in relation to the cost involved, & there are different options available depending on where one lives etc, to overcome this problem. As an example here, 3 out of the 4 federations in my local area, combine together to cut down the costs in relation to fuel & labour & all go on the one truck, & it is very successful (4000 -5000 birds) & in the end everyone is a winner in my view. Now !!!!!! a bit of humour ;D ;D ;D had a couple of young blokes :) last friday night etc, 2 Scotsman's from around Edinburgh way I believe (Talk funny) ;D ;D ;D, who were over here on holiday's & they called in at my club when we were doing the basketing etc for a bit of a talk & a look. Bloody cold place ;D ;D ;D they said to me ;) not like this back home & they also said you have a lot of birds here tonight 500 which I just smiled to myself & said not really :'( :'( compared to the good old days, long gone now thou, but they just couldn't get over our clubs rooms & property etc compared to what they had at home. Chalk & cheese type situation they said, & the funniest part was when we sent the birds away on the truck in the units etc, they just couldn't believe the difference compared to home, rough as guts type situation as far as they were concerned, but we all just smiled & said !!!!!!!, we breed them tough over here. I don't think so ;) , My old mate ???????? "Mr Eyesign" (Long departed now) up in heaven :) ???????, recommended 4 or 5 ibuprofen tablets in a bucket of water. Helped them get over any pain & discomfort after a race or the day before etc. Enjoy.

Do they ever ;) one of the real hot spots for racing pigeons over there. Unit 1, Spring Hill Florida, Gulf Coast homing club (Look it up on the internet) & you may learn a thing or two ;D ;D ;D in regards to how those yanks do things etc. Enjoy.

A bit of a tricky question ;) this one to answer here. No one solution will suit everyone I'm afraid, "My view is". One must decide what is best in the overall picture etc for our sport, or what comes first. The club, the flyer or the pigeon & with out a doubt in my view it's the club every time & what's best for it in general & what is acceptable to the majority of it's members on race day. Now !!!!!!!! I'm about to upset some of you here ;D ;D ;D but to me ??????? all you flyers that wish to have mutable clocking etc, are just on a big ego trip :) . Because no way known in my view, are you at all concerned about the best thing for your club or it's future or your other members etc. "Sorry" but you must call a spade a spade in my view. PS. & that's coming from someone, who has been quite happy to clock 1 or 2 pigeons at the most in any race etc for 50 odd years & I have no regrets what so ever, in that situation as it is here. Enjoy.

That may be true & one would never wish to take away the pleasure of a trophy, for those that treasure them. "But" for many old timers ;) they are just dust collectors & a damm nuisance in my view :) . Now !!!!!! how we solved this problem etc here, was we allowed anyone who chose too, if they had won a few in the one season etc, the value of the trophy's in cash. but they then had to buy something of value to them, with a receipt for the club as evidence of the purchase. Then this was then presented to them at the presentation day/night, in place of the trophy. Much better all round ;D ;D ;D as the wifes mostly brought the gifts etc, so they were very very happy.
