  1. Was raining first thing but turning into a lovely morning in sunny Avonbrig Saw a couple a deer on the moss this morning
  2. One of the best fliers in my area said to my dad when he first started up that he didn't go to other fanciers lofts as his loft wasn't good enough to leave and be spending time at somebody elses
  3. .Aye a know. The whole position thing is a bit of a farse to be honest. Most folk cannae help where they stay,ae Stevie .Always somebody in a better loft location than somebody else regardless of the distance or racepoints.Credit should be given where its due.You can look at any result and pick out some of the performances of the race(not just the National winner)
  4. I'd like to see the inland nationals dropped and more emphasis on Combine and Amalgamation racing from racepoints such as Leicester,Eastbourne and Bovingdon.Financially for the SNFC its a big no no mind you.
  5. I'll sound like a little bit of a square tit in this post but heres an extract on green peas from the writings of Arie van den Hoek, the famous dutch pigeon journailst. "With the geen pea the pigeon fancier is supplying the troughs of his birds with the best legume. They contain less protein and minerals than beans, but still have more than enough. The high nutritive value is mainly due to the ample content of B and E vitamins, and vitamin forming substances such as provitamin A:carotin" he goes onto say if they are abscent in your mixture add some yourself and the doos eat them happily as they are easily digested. Its all just theories and opinions at the end of the day.they'll be many many a top flier whos birds have never seen a green pea in their lives Best thing I've read about feeding was from Ad Schaerlaeckens. He advised new starts not to get too carried away or bogged down with feeding. He said if you visit the ten best lofts in your country no two of them will feed the same
  6. Got it from a clubmate. He stitched up a young cock for me and put that stuff on it.Hes used it for years, told me they used to use it for burns etc. during the war
  7. used to use it to clean any wounds on injured pigeons. Was introduced to powdered penicillin this year though-its good stuff
  8. Some say green peas are the best legume fanciers can give their pigeons
  9. Heard a story years ago about a drug dealer who kept the doos.Police suspected he was dealing from his loft. They raided the place, turning it upside down,to no avail. It was later revealed that the doos were sitting on them .The guy was hiding the drugs inside the dummies eggs
  10. I could be talking p*** but I think you'd get a better birdage if Rennes was the Gold Cup racepoint. For the name alone
  11. No not at all.I dinna use dummies at all.Go in the loft tomorrow morning put the hen in a basket for a few minutes.Boil the kettle, pour the water in a pan then add the eggs and let it boil on your cooker for 2 or 3 minutes.Run them under the cold tap for a second so they aren't scalding hot when you put them back on the nest then let the hen back up to them.Prefer this to dummies as I think the doos know they arnae real eggs.Alternatively you can shake them until you hear liquid slooshing around in them but have found boiling them to be better
  12. Have heard people say that a mile over water is the equivalent to a mile and a half over land.Doubt there is any way of proving this figure to be exact but basically when they say this they mean its a lot harder flying over water than it is land.If you look at the velocities of the last 50-100 Irish national winners you can see how this could be the case, quite rare for the INFC Kings cup winner to be doing over 1200ypm obviously they are flying into the West though-usually against the wind. Supposedely it has a lot to do with thermal uplift or lack of it over the sea.
  13. Boil them then put them back under her
  14. If your talking about the people who win from every distance at every level(not many of them cutting about) as the "top" fliers. Then from what I gather they do differently to the "average"or "poor" pigeon fliers is basically invest more time and effort into their birds.Although they wouldn't really view it as "effort" as its a lifestyle to them. They are doomen through and through and more or less any spare time they have goes towards improving their birds or themselves as fanciers. Some may not necessarily have as much time as others but the time the do have is usually well spent, doing something of genuine benefit to the birds instead of kidding themselves on. As for accepting defeat I think its because they don't accept it that makes them above average.Nice if they are gracious in defeat though and nodody likes a BIGHEED. It all falls down to what you want to get out your birds though. Some people without mentioning any names want to win every race from start to finish and put in the necessary time and effort to do so doesn't make them any better or worst than the man whos happy to see his birds messing round the garden, come home from races and get the occasional good one. The people I'd have to think of as average or poor fanciers are the ones who expect to win when they are not putting in half as much as the guys who beat them week in week out.As well as the ones who decry those performing better than them and try to make excuses for themselves. You only get out what you put in
  15. Agree fully At the moment I have around 9 pairs of well bred pigeons i've gathered over the last year or two for breeding purposes.Suppose they won't really deserve the title of stock birds until they have actually produced something. As for number, the more pigeons anybody has that are breeding winners at their chosen distance the better. Out of the 9 pair I'm trying out at the moment if i was left with one 3 or 4 years from now I'd be happy.Read about a fancier who has been winning at the highest level for nigh on 4 decades and he claims to have only really had 3 or 4 exceptional stock pigeons.
  16. I'm often left wondering why I bother to put a bath out for the pigeons
  17. If you fancy typing them all out then be my guest Nah I'll get round to putting them up sometime soon. Its a shame just doing the first 30 or 40 though when you see some of the names you'd be missing out.
  18. Aye I'd been told by a man in the know that Jake Burrell was the West's greatest ever fancier. After looking back a few of these old results the last wee while would say he has a case
  19. Yeh me too I've a few more I'll get round to putting up.Including Johnny Kirkpatrick's Rennes!!! Point of interest-in that result(1937) 80 of the top 100 pigeons belong to the West Section Changed days eh
  20. Shieldhill has produced many famous sons such as PBs very own MUTTLEY 1 and Rangers ace-Davie Weir .Its also where my dad and gran were born so for me personally this result gave me a lot of pleasure when I got hold of it. Hope its of interest to some of the other PB members 4390 birds were liberated on the 1st of July 1939 at 7-10am into a west wind. The Anderson Bros. of Shieldhill clocked their Ch Pd hen "Flora Macdonald" at 4-59am July 2nd flying 550miles,recording a velocity of 1020ypm and winning the greatest pigeon race in Scotland. 2.Kerr Bros,Armadale 3.Burrel Bros.,Douglas Water 4.H.Scott,Markinch 5.Reid Bros,Condorrat 6.J.Rutherford,E.Wemyss 7.J.Kirkpatrick,Annan 8.A.Cook,Tayport 9.J.Bisset,Burntisland 10.McLean Bros,Coatbridge 11.H.Carmichael,Coldstream 12.R.M Douglas,Annan 13.J. 21. Thats unreal!! Was Wilson Noble's "Black Rocket" clocked on the night when it won the North section from Rennes??
  22. They're looking smashing Steven
  23. Excellant performance!!! whats the furthest ever flown into Scotland on the day??723 miles??
  24. Aye its not easy to win a national into the West Section.Theres been/is a fair few fanciers through there that could easily fall into "best ever" category despite not actually winning a national
