Happyflyer Posted December 28, 2017 Report Posted December 28, 2017 Hi folks just a wee post to see what's best to feed your birds for best results any help would be appreciated as I'm new to the sport roll on 2018 🕊
tiger Posted December 28, 2017 Report Posted December 28, 2017 Most corn is sound you buy from any corn merchant the secret is how much you feed them .jmo
alex young Posted December 28, 2017 Report Posted December 28, 2017 I think you're spoilt for choice now with most mixtures being of good quality,I feed for the seasons ie. breeding, racing etc. and use Versele Laga but as I say some of the other brands look very good.
Happyflyer Posted December 28, 2017 Author Report Posted December 28, 2017 Cheers lads well its the balance you need to get correct or they don't come in well trap I've learned this already.
Wiley Posted December 28, 2017 Report Posted December 28, 2017 (edited) I think with feed it’s all down to experimenting that’s where the fun is in the game well for me anyways. I try something different with feed every year, and 2018 will be no different with one section not on my usual methods. Will it be better who knows but it’s fun to find out what works and what doesnt. Edited December 28, 2017 by Wiley
Roland Posted December 29, 2017 Report Posted December 29, 2017 True Wiley ... remarkable how the tend revolves eh! Only thing I'd say is a % of Groats all year...
gulkie Posted December 30, 2017 Report Posted December 30, 2017 True Wiley ... remarkable how the tend revolves eh! Only thing I'd say is a % of Groats all year...why % groats Roland ??
Roland Posted December 30, 2017 Report Posted December 30, 2017 A certain percentage always... For rearing young a very high percentage with say Tic beans. 60 - 75 Groats. Some times with little seeds added. But not at the groats expense. Race days 30% or more. Conditioning - with say canary seeds or such. Winter / cold nights / Race days a little hemp gives good heat units.
Kyleakin Lofts Posted December 30, 2017 Report Posted December 30, 2017 why % groats Roland ?? Nothing to beat a wee drap porridge. Slow release of energy throughout the day.
Goodview Posted December 30, 2017 Report Posted December 30, 2017 Always used to rear the young anes on big horse beans and ....in a dish in the nest box was ,, 50/50 hormoform and porridge oats......never done them no harm
Roland Posted December 31, 2017 Report Posted December 31, 2017 Many a good young bird race won on Horse Beans, that's for sure.
gulkie Posted January 2, 2018 Report Posted January 2, 2018 Many a good young bird race won on Horse Beans, that's for sure.do you still get such a thing as horse beans ??
THE FIFER Posted January 2, 2018 Report Posted January 2, 2018 Many a good young bird race won on Horse Beans, that's for sure. for lots of fanciers going back a bit that was the main feed if not the only , is the tick beans you get today not the same, and you used to get small 4LB bags of pigeon mixture at the cooperative, the beans you got at the farms, when you went out working on the farms picking potatoes ,instead of brining home a small bag of potatoes it was beans for the birds ,
dunc50 Posted January 2, 2018 Report Posted January 2, 2018 Nothing to beat a wee drap porridge. Slow release of energy throughout the day. your right a we drop o porridge just before you scrape them out,
