I attended the AGM of the Solway Federation this afternoon and against my protests I was persuaded to accept the position of Vice President.I felt that after having served seven years as President I had done enough for the pigeon fancy in the Solway. However despite my reluctance I will do the best I can for my fellow members. What I have problems with is the fact that I have never claimed to be other than an old guy who likes racing pigeons ,I have no big wins to my credit.I have always wondered why so many experienced and talented fanciers will run a mile rather than accept positions of reppnsibilty.

Walter it was with great Dissappointment of the majority of fanciers in the Solway federation when you chose to step down from office and your re appointment today as Vice President only confirms that

With your profession approach and guidance along with others that you know only to well ,you guided the federation from near ruin into one with a very healthy bank balance ,new transporter ,website ,etc etc

Having known you personally now for many years I feel very fortunate to be able to call you a friend A Very Dear Friend ,Long may your good health continue and you truly deserve all the plaudits for your efforts in the sport of pigeon racing and far beyond .

Have to agree with all your comments about Walter. The Solway Fed has in my opinion never had a greater representative to the SHU than Walter, he makes sure the Solways interests are always looked after, and very seldom does not come to a meeting.

Amazing how many want to turn up mark their birds and clear off.

positions should be on a rotation basis

Some people want to shout all the odds but never take a job

Only this year was I dragged to and Emergency meeting at 9.30 at night... with no childcare for my daughter had to drop her off in Glasgow and go to the meeting then back pick her up and home...Then the next day ye get ppl moaning about the decision at the meeting...well they can vote next time because it wont be me. Yes I accepted to be a fed delegate but I've done it two years now along with the presidents job so it's someone elses turn. Too busy working full time overtime family time to even fly pigeons

It really is a problem George, how to persuade thoughtful and helpful fanciers to become involved in the administration of pigeon organisations.Sometimes in the pigeon world the expression which includes the words two short planks comes to mind..Of course this does not apply to the imaginative and erudite contributors to Pigeons Basic.

we have members in our club that have NEVER been to a meeting.

I remember another club had the same problem a few years ago, nobody turned up, the chairman put a proposition in that the club increase subs from £20 to £250.

Was not an empty seat to be had
