Just had a phone call from operations room at Heathrow Airport, someone liberated a sizable flock of pigeons in there vicinity this morning and this has caused an incident leading to a number of the pigeons being killed. Contact will be made with owners/clubs when rings have been identified.

A reminder to anyone training or racing look at where you let them go.

If this can be proved with video evidence as such, they could call for a PROSECUTION against who is responsible. :( I have been involved with a bird strike before, not pigeons but a flock of Geese, and I can tell you its very frightening sitting in that seat and just hearing the big thud. :o

Big willie gass from inchinan has his loft under the flight path for Glasgow prob around 500 yards from end of runway and I'm sure there has never been any probs ,think this would be race birds on there way and just happens to be right over Heathrow , I train mine from Hillingdon which is around 10/12 miles to me and only a mile or so from Glasgow airport ,there's guys who fly in Renfrew Johnstone linwood Paisley who have large teams of youngsters who I would bet fly over the airport on occasions . Never any probs . So IMHO I think we will find it will be race birds on there way home ,remember it's Saturday ??????

I believe there is a legal radius of about 8 miles around any airport within which you are not allowed to liberate. There are also guidelines for race controllers about notifying airport control rooms.

Having said that in addition to pigeons I believe there is also a huge flock of grey geese and Whoopers swans which graze in a field close to Glasgow Airport without problem.

Think, personally, that we should all wait and see any outcome, if any at all. The rings is collected would have a pretty clear indication as to where they are from ... and quite possibly why they were there. JMO.

That would mean you weren't allowed to lib your birds in your garden robert as you aren't 8 miles from Glasgow airport .

At Gatwick airport earlier in the year and there must've been 30-40 pigeons knocking about the building tops.

I know that Stuart but the legislation does not mention numbers. There are any number of fanciers close to Prestwick Airport

I don't think letting pigeons out to fly from a loft situated near an airport can in any way be construed as liberating pigeons near an airport. And if there was any problem keeping pigeons in a loft near an airport, I'm sure it just wouldn't be allowed.

So ian what difference does it make if robert lets his birds out and me letting mines go at his place , I would be breaking the law he wouldn't ????

Stuart,

The Legislation that covers our General Race License is Diseases of Poultry (England) Order 2003. Within that there are definitions which include:

“racing pigeon†means any pigeon transported or intended for transport from its pigeon house (any installation used for keeping or breeding racing pigeons) to be released so that it may freely fly back to its pigeon house or to any other destination.

If you transport birds and release them from your mates to fly to your own or another loft, we’d call that training, but as far as the General Race License is concerned it is seen as just the same as racing. We also know that when your mate lets his birds out, they are not racing – its common sense - but Public bodies like Councils etc are sometimes short of common sense where pigeons are concerned. So if they ever refused permission for a pigeon loft, or to keep pigeons, or pulled you up for letting birds out the loft because it is near an airport then that definition is your defence.

Ye I know the rules ian but ,there's no difference from letting out a team of say 100 youngsters ,to training the same amount ,they could both run into the path of an aircraft . Luckily I don't keep big numbers . I've watched mine crossing the airfield at Glasgow ,if there's a plane taking off or landing the body swerve it .
