neila Posted February 27, 2014 Report Posted February 27, 2014 if cocks and hens are kept spare and flown in this way to early May then paired how long or how many nest would members think the birds would fly well on I want to race a few paired but don't want them to go flat when the better races come I was thinking of a first nest just on dummy eggs and a last nest going to small ybs just to see is that adds to the wish to race, or would it be better to have a them paired then split for say 6 weeks then repaired for the main races ? in the past I tried a few on the first nest of the year and they performed well but they had not thrown a flight to late in the year but I have noted my best results have come with birds on the 2nd and 3rd flight which would not be the case if kept spare to may for the early channel races
walterboswell59 Posted February 27, 2014 Report Posted February 27, 2014 mines will be paired mid march to be on 2nd or 3rd flight for the long races neila
neila Posted February 27, 2014 Author Report Posted February 27, 2014 thank you Walter , would your target race be late june time? what are your views on pairing early may (if I can hold the hens from going lesbo) would the incentive of the first nest be out weighed by the lack of flights thrown
walterboswell59 Posted February 27, 2014 Report Posted February 27, 2014 never tried them paired that late i see what your trying to do but i like to see the first flight away as i dont think they reach peak condition untill they drop one flight at least but you can pair late let them sit 10 days or more to suite the race you want then throw the eggs out to get ready for the race you want and when they go down on 2nd set they should cast first flight when sitting around 10 days or so or keep them sit dummies then let them go the race on first wee youngster of the year or chipping eggs this works for both sexes but takes planning but great incentive and yes thats to suite races june to mid july hope this helps give you some ideas neil

blaz Posted February 27, 2014 Report Posted February 27, 2014 i fly my lot on natural paired some early this year the rest of them paired and going down now. now birds are all paired i won,t split them.i will mess about with 3 or 4 pair in racing.by letting them hatch 1 yb then take the hen or cock away 4 days before race and let the other one think it is the only one looking after the yb.same thing next again week with the other one. i will also let some sit dummy eggs with a race in mind then put ticking eggs under them i find hens are better.others i will just race no wee tricks.my lot race well enough from 60 to 428 miles in club and fed.i find flying natural on open bowl having birds happy stress free and healthy makes for a good season. with an open bowl cocks are out in morning then go in hens come out .when hens go back on the nest later in day cocks are back out.

blaz Posted February 27, 2014 Report Posted February 27, 2014 buster ticking eggs are a plastic egg with a very small motor inside.when turned on it ticks just like a chick trying to get out the egg.
greenlands Posted February 27, 2014 Report Posted February 27, 2014 Hi Buster,I use plastic eggs that halve and put a bit of damp moss in with a worm, the moving worm make the birds think the eggs are hatching. :emoticon-0138-thinking:

blaz Posted February 27, 2014 Report Posted February 27, 2014 soupie i have looked all over for them .also had mates look when over in belgium can,t find them anywhare.i got the ones i have as a gift of a mate.if i could find them would buy more.like said above put a worm in egg same thing for me it is not. as the ticking egg is the same random clicks as a yb chipping out stops and starts just the same.

PIGEONPACKMAN Posted February 28, 2014 Report Posted February 28, 2014 L always thought yoj had to treat each pigeoj0n as an individual and watch each pair and take notes the birds tell you when they are on form and its your job to notice it.
