Just came across this clip on YouTube.

Another side of pigeon racing in SAUDI which I presume is called the RACE of YOUR LIFE!

Why doesn’t the likes of PETA spend more of its time and money into doing something about these barbaric sports in other countries instead of putting all their efforts into banning channel racing? It beats me!

I'm not sure of what this 'sport' is about but if it is what I think it is then it proves something very important for us.

This appears to be a contest of speed in level flight between a racing pigeon and a peregrine both of which are released simultaneously at ground level i.e. start on the same level. No doubt money, lots of it, changes hands, and I don't see these Saudi pigeon fanciers (or any other) throwing their money away by bringing their best birds just to feed a hawk. They must feel they have a good chance of winning, and to do that their bird must be fit, fast, agile and streetwise (to avoid being taken).

From what I could make of the video, the peregrine won only once, and that pigeon dropped (for cover, in a desert?) rather than staying above the falcon and motoring for home..

Think you've named that tune in one Ian, but i couldn't make out the Falcon winning any of the duals, from what i can see it only got a feed from the owner when he swung the dead bird on the rope to get his falcon back.

It was different falcons used John. The first one to be released was a different bird to the one being fed on the rope at the end. The bird at the end was a bird with more white than brown feathers and the one at the start with the hood taken off was more brown than white feathering. I think Ian is correct and the first bird released was lunch. There was absolutely nowhere it could hide and I am surprised none of the pigeons tried to dart under the cars parked there as it seemed the only place of sanctury! It appears to be several different falcons released throughout the video. I think the paper slip with number 4 drawn from the urn was the pigeon which was to compete against a particular falcon? The falcons need to be in top shape too and with the amount of pigeons in the baskets there would need to be several falcons. If there was only one or two then they would be knackered by the end of one or two chases each. Could even be one fresh falcon to one fresh pigeon, so that everyone had the exact same chance fitness wise of falcon and pigeon?

Must be some funny money involved though as by the looks of the Arabs they aint short of a bob or two with their big top of the range cars!
