Owing to a combination of old age and failing health I find myself unable to give the young birds the training they deserve.I know that some successful fanciers hold that young birds should go to every race in the programme.Equally I know of other fanciers who do not bother with young bird racing at all.I wonder if the members of this site have an opinion on the matter.

I used to know an old miner Walter , he never drove in his life , when retired always found money tight .he flew the Welsh South East programme .flew the birds on open loft .first race was only 47 miles to him. he used to send them un-trained ?. yes he had his share of losses (who doesn't),he always completed the yb programme ,and as with Old birds ,fought above his weight at the distance ."food for thought" ??

yb racing does nothing for me now i just like to see them come home i get just as much pleasure getting them home as yb's as i do winning yb races but i might get a clock set for the yb duplication race but then again maybies naw

I luv all races, any distance yb or ob. The only thing is,I haven't owned any birds bred for sprint/middle distance races for many years but I hope to correct that soon. :emoticon-0138-thinking:

I believe if you race old birds on widowhood they benefit from racing the full programme as babies. Winding up w/h cocks with very little or no experience more times than not results in heavy losses in the early races.

Walter !!!!!! one can only do what one can do type of thing.Pigeons learn to adapt to any type of system/method I believe if they have 1/2 brain etc.Old age/health can be a real killer at times sadly, that's where friends come in handy "Let them do the training" & you then can just sit back & enjoy what ever pace your able to set yourself. Even in the worst case, if you are no longer able to race etc, great pleasure can be had by just having the birds in the back yard as far as I'm concerned.
