As you know I am a beginner and I have a couple of races left, and I want to stop some of my young birds so that I have a yearling team for next year. How do you guys pick the birds to stop from all the youngsters you have.

I race mine right through so cant really answer your question but one thing to bare in mind is the best youngsters dont always make the best old birds.

stop them now one bad race and you could be back to square one, they've had a bit of experience without been burnt out , they'll repay you next year ;)

i used to do a piont system myself ,position back to the loft for example 8th , 3rd , 12th = total 23 divided by the amount of races (3) = answer 7 ,and those with low scores tended to be the better ones :emoticon-0138-thinking:

I split my early round and the second round, the first round went to the first three races, and the second round to the last three races, and a mixture to the last one. They have done well in very hard conditions taking into the factor of heat and high winds in different races etc, I have not lost as many as my club mates but I have not bred as many as well. So all the birds have had three to four races so far. the birds all come from three different families from sprint to distance, the distant families have not come as quickly but have been there in each of their races, where as the sprint families have been my first birds. I lost many in my first old bird racing due to some awful races, some being a smash, and of course my learning curb, so I am trying to save the best to race next year as yearlings. I am not sure as to how to pick these out and any left over I should send to the last two as a decider if you see what I mean.I am looking forward to next year so I feel I must make a choice now so any good advice is more than welcome.

if you have room you can always stick one or two to one side if you lose a old bird or two then you can replace them i lost 2 cocks 2 year ago before the racing due to hawks i stuck in 2 cocks that were not in the first pick one of them went on to top the federation and had many other positions he never even reared a youngster if i remember rightly

I am flying natural, I have15 cocks left and twelve hens, I have 4 pairs left from last year, and 20 nest box places for next year, what do you think.

We like to get our cocks out to at least wetherby which is roughly 178 miles, but we only stop then ones we feel are promising, the rest will be sent right through the card.

Thank you for your reply, as a beginner I could do with all the advice I can get, I have put this up on other sites as I wish to think the answers through. If I stop them now do you think I should keep training them or just let them rest, I ask because if I was to carry on racing I would still be training a couple of times a week at least.

Stop them, seperate them and get them thro the moult. You might aswell put three cocks on the road to even up yer numbers?
