Roland Posted August 5, 2012 Report Posted August 5, 2012 Because we got a star like Chris Boardman, and the governing body used that success as a spring board to go to the 'Schools' and excite and bring in fresh youngsters. Gave them a 'Dream'! Then they brought in - Bought - the best coaches in. They have a very competitive scheme now at all level. Like wise the Rowers. Gymnastics who did the same. The results are showing it is paying dividends. We did likewise with the school recruitment with Athletics in early 70's... which funding - though proved it had many great points also became detrimental as the athletes had it too easy to earn a crust. They didn't have to compete to get paid, where as the 60's / 70'sand early 80's trained in school halls and met up week - ends. Now they are changing that with yard sticks. Too many underperformed and got paid. Could mention, like you all, many failures. Also ones that had their funding took away and they then improved a lot. We need to tap into the youngster from an early age. Now with lottery funding and all the high techs available, they should be another surge of an influx, and these should dwindle slowly into good class performers in ALL fields. Again, per ratio to population Britain far surpasses the rest of he world easily. This could, and should improve even. Let's hope. But we have brought into effective top coaches at most sports. And many schools. Some counties are sadly failing their pupils still though by not giving them the chance, and still too much favouring the personality rather than the ability.
gulkie Posted August 6, 2012 Report Posted August 6, 2012 not too sure about dates but bikes have a long history here in UK hard to stay on with 2 20 bird panniers on the luggage rack
