ALF Posted July 13, 2012 Report Posted July 13, 2012 I paired up the 1st saturday in march this year so my yb's are'nt too old although i had a few 2 weeks before my own were out the nest from my mate Malky now my question or maybe my point is over the last 2 or 3 weeks these yb's have been falling to bits and i mean falling to bits the loft is quite airy plenty light no darkness with them they are on 2 part beans 1 part 4 season mix 1 part wheat 1 part barley and 1 part layer pellets not a heavy feed and not too seedy either so what is making them moult this quick??? they have oregano tea 2 or 3 times a week maybe cider vinegar once a week tae dropping are perfect yb's look great flying ok but never had them moult like this this early???
Wiley Posted July 13, 2012 Report Posted July 13, 2012 Alan, is there a difference in the moult between your birds and the birds you received from your friend
ALF Posted July 13, 2012 Author Report Posted July 13, 2012 Alan, is there a difference in the moult between your birds and the birds you received from your friend Not really Ryan that was the 1st thing i checked mate but never noticed any big difference TBO
ALF Posted July 13, 2012 Author Report Posted July 13, 2012 Not in the least bit worried about them but i cant remember them going into a natural moult this early and as heavy as they have done
Tony C Posted July 13, 2012 Report Posted July 13, 2012 I paired up the 1st saturday in march this year so my yb's are'nt too old although i had a few 2 weeks before my own were out the nest from my mate Malky now my question or maybe my point is over the last 2 or 3 weeks these yb's have been falling to bits and i mean falling to bits the loft is quite airy plenty light no darkness with them they are on 2 part beans 1 part 4 season mix 1 part wheat 1 part barley and 1 part layer pellets not a heavy feed and not too seedy either so what is making them moult this quick??? they have oregano tea 2 or 3 times a week maybe cider vinegar once a week tae dropping are perfect yb's look great flying ok but never had them moult like this this early??? I think the way the weather has been of late I think the birds body clock think autumn is approaching. I'm seriously considering having lights installed in my y/bird loft to try to hold back the moult. Even though mine are darkness youngsters I fear they may start moulting earlier than usual.

andy Burgess Posted July 13, 2012 Report Posted July 13, 2012 very good post this , i have a mix of darkness and natural yb in 2 sections.and like you ALF have noticed the same ,not all affected ,but when cleaning out ,finding the odd flight or tail feather in both sections .mine were put over end of March first round .also handled a fellow club members birds in the week , and most on the sixth flight .i have assumed like Tony C ,its down to the weather ,not too fussed ,but will be wary of which go to the last races
ALF Posted July 13, 2012 Author Report Posted July 13, 2012 where are they on there flights Alan I checked about 10 today Del they were between the 5th and 6th flight plenty of covers feathers missing tae and some of them have moulted oer the heid and look great noo weird but in very good nick eating well flying ok to well and the sh!t is spot on
yeboah Posted July 13, 2012 Report Posted July 13, 2012 I think the way the weather has been of late I think the birds body clock think autumn is approaching. I'm seriously considering having lights installed in my y/bird loft to try to hold back the moult. Even though mine are darkness youngsters I fear they may start moulting earlier than usual.Good point about the weather, with the continuous rain we had and early dark nights noticed that some of my darkness yb's have feathers missing on there nose ,will have to think about putting the lights on the timer if weather stays bad i am sure as you say the birds think its autumn ,(never mind the doos my old brain thinks its autumn )
Delboy Posted July 13, 2012 Report Posted July 13, 2012 Theyve entered the big moult m8, very good for the yb season as they are a wee bit early. They will be ok by the 3rd or 4th race , renewing all the body feathers.
dwh Posted July 13, 2012 Report Posted July 13, 2012 JUST WATCHED AN ITEM ON THE BBC NEWS BIRDS IN THE WILD GOING INTO MOULT EARLY AND DOING ALL SORTS OF STRANGE THINGS
Guest pigeonguy147 Posted July 13, 2012 Report Posted July 13, 2012 same here big man i go into the loft in the morning and have plenty flights lying about a good thing for me as i will stop them racing when they are on their fourth then put them away for next year
Delboy Posted July 13, 2012 Report Posted July 13, 2012 No doubt you ve accelerated the moult in some way or the birds are in super nick. The other reason could be the weather we have had, damp and muggy.Ive got a few on there 5th as well.
ALF Posted July 13, 2012 Author Report Posted July 13, 2012 just checked when the SNRPc was as my good friend Vincie had a yb in the sale off his 1st open Wanstead Flats winner and had put a minimum price on what he wanted it to go for and when it didnae make the reserve he gave it to me that night and told me to put it in my loft but i noticed even that yb was baldy oer the heid the other day but i never cheacked it's flight's but it was straight oot the nest 1st week in may so isnae old
