Delboy Posted July 1, 2012 Report Posted July 1, 2012 I would be interested in knowing where the Tunnel takes you to in France before you can get off. Have always thought it just went straight to Paris, if so how far it is to the race point from there. Also are you allowed to take livestock on board with you. If it IS possible to transport this way and it is economically viable to do so i would support it all the way. Im sure Gordon Geddes took the SNRPC birds through the tunnel John and saved alot of time.
Novice Posted July 1, 2012 Report Posted July 1, 2012 John-I am a stranger to international travel but I think the tunnel runs from dover to Calais you then have a 4 hour 15 minute drive to Carentan. Not sure if this will help for the future or eliminate the possibility all together.

Novice Posted July 2, 2012 Report Posted July 2, 2012 While on the subject of this race I was wondering what type of feed the birds are given while in the basket.A high energy mix to supply the fuel for the return journey or a standard "best all round mix" as most federations use.
ALF Posted July 2, 2012 Report Posted July 2, 2012 WHEN THEY WENT TO SALISBURY THEY WERE GIVEN BEATTIES 4 SEASONS MIX I WASNAE BEST PLEASED WHEN I SEEN IT AS I WOULDNAE FEED IT WHILE RACING AT THIS STAGE OF THE SEASON...
Guest TAMMY_1 Posted July 2, 2012 Report Posted July 2, 2012 Its god to know someone has listened at the AGM. To clarify things, the Marking was brought forward because of the Ferry times. At the port where the birds will sail from there are only 2 sailing times, midnight and 6am. With Thursday marking it meant the transporter would be catching the Friday midnight ferry crossing, there would be no time to get the birds to Carentan, rest them for the allotted time and get an Early liberation. So it will be Wednesday Marking and a Saturday race with the transporter on site Friday afternoon and the birds rested over night 'til the Saturday morning. EAP.#that was the exact same reason our birds were marked last wednesday for a race on saturday but unfortunately they were held over till yesterday

The feed the birds are given before liberation is so very important especially when they are in the basket for several days.Who the .*expletive removed* is Beattie?I think all organisations should decide what feed they will be using during transportation at the AGM.Often the good work done by a progressive fancier can be undone in the basket. We have a great deal to learn from the continentals on this front. This post is not a criticism of anyone.

Good post here.I believe on the continent they feed maize only for high carbs when on the transporters.I wouldnt disagree with this method as well as putting an electrolite through the watering system. If you only use maize then it makes it equally fair for every bird in the convoy.I remember disgussing this at a SNFC meeting and it was unanimous that we do it, but I dont think it was ever done.

Absolutely we need to think progressively. Protein rich feeds on the transporter are outdated.Let's give the birds the best possible chance of returning home.
